I'm saving up for a iBook 14" Combo. I know there is a hack out there to have the screen spanning capability; i don't want to ban my warranty, so I don't want to do that.

I have a 19" LCD GEM monitor and if I were to hook it up to the iBook, would it have 1024x768 or the max resolution of the screen(1280x1024).

And if it can't have the max resolution, can you tell me a little bit more about this hack thingy?

How can you remove it if you need to send it into AppleCare or something?

With normal mirroring both displays have to be the same resolution, and since the iBook has a resolution of 1024x768 and can't run any higher resolution you would need to run your external display at 1024x768 which would make to picture quality look very bad on the external display.

I am running the hack and I can tell you it is worth doing. It is very easy to remove if you need to send it into apple. Just reset the PRAM by holding cmd + ctrl + P + R on your keyboard while booting.

I have one more question, can the iBooks be connected to a TV with this (http://store.apple.com/1-800-780-5009/WebObjects/EducationIndividual.woa/70905/wo/JR23gVY0IUY82RRcpfT1ATn6dlO/7.0.0.11.1.0.6.9.3.19.0.1.1.1.1.2.1.0.15) ?

Yes but -- the resolution on "computer" items like text and menus (as opposed to full screen JPGs) will be unacceptable.

Be careful! That is not the right adapter. That one is for the old clamshell G3 iBooks. The one you want is mini-VGA to Video adapter.

This is the one you want:

Since upgrading to 10.4.2 my VGA -> Composite/SVideo adapter does not work, the display preferences show resolutions and options for a connected VGA display, not the NTSC/PAL options I used to get when I plugged into a TV. Can anybody help me with this problem?

So your warranty is void if you decide to use the screen spanning hack? Kinda changes my decision on iBook vs PB

yes, it does void your warranty

but it can be removed very easily before you send it in to AppleCare

Another question: what does the hack change? Does it give you another icon is sys prefs? Can someone take a screen shot of it? Thanks!
