View Full Version : Seemingly Random Kernel Panics?

Hey all,

I consider myself well acquainted to IT support and can usually solve a lot of my own problems when it comes to computers and especially Macs (seeing as I'm a computer science major), but this one really has me stumped.

I have a late 2011 MBP 15" i7 2.4Ghz with the antiglare display. I upgraded the RAM with 12GB OWC (other world computing - also known as Macsales) 1333Mhz RAM and I used the OWC Data Doubler with an OWC Mercury Extreme 3G 120GB SSD in place of my optical drive. I have had this configuration in my past 4 MacBook Pros since 2009 and have loved it (The data doubler anyway, the RAM I only upgraded last November).

In the past two weeks my computer has started crashing for what seems to be no reason at all. Usually I can pinpoint Kernel panics by what I was doing at the time, but this seems completely random. It did it the other day while I was working with dreamweaver, it did it a few days before that while I was copying things to my firewire 800 external, it did it yesterday while I wasn't even using the computer, just playing music with pandora, and it did it last night while I was working with Final Cut Pro X.

I would say it might be the hard drive, but I JUST replaced my OWC Mercury Extreme 3G with an OWC Mercury Electra 6G two days ago and it didn't fix it. I used TechTool Pro to test the RAM which also came back fine, which leads me to believe it might be software related?

I have coppied the entire kernal panic log that was submitted to Apple to see if anyone with more technological experience than myself might have a better change decoding it than I am. Anybody see anything that might be the cause?

Don't rely on tech tool. When I was a genius it would tell us RAM was fine when it was the issue 9/10 times.

Pull the RAM and put the stock RAM in and use it for a few days. RAM, Processors (MP/G5), Logic Boards (MP/G5), and OS where almost always the culprits especially RAM.

My rule of thumb. When you see a KP, Disk Utility from another computer, then remove the 3rd Party RAM, then remove all cards (Graphics, etc.), then OS Wipe, then Genius Bar trip.

Good Luck.
