I have an old white MacBook, circa 2008, and have Snow Leopard on it.

Are there any limitations on how big of a Hard-Drive (HDD) I can install?

(I thought you couldn't go over 750GB because of software or hardware compatibility issues...)

Thanks,

Debbie

I don't believe any SATA equipped Mac has an upper limitation on capacity. There may by a physical size limit (check the height specifically).

like Robbie said, just as long as you get a 2.5" harddrive, 1 TB should be fine

But you can only use 2.5" S-ATA HDDs with a maximum height of 9.5 mm in white MacBooks.

MacBook, MacBook Pro: Replacing the Hard Disk Drive, transferring data to the new HDD

the guide includes:
  • 0. Identify your MacBook or MacBook Pro
  • 1. Getting a new HDD
  • 2. Guides to replace the internal HDD with a newer one
  • 3. Transferring data from the old HDD to the new HDD
  • 4. Using the optical disk drive (ODD) slot for placing an SSD or HDD inside the MB/P (OPTIBAY)

Actually the Apple Support website reports there is a limit to the size of a volume in Mac OS X. So you probably want to check there first before installing a Hard Drive to make sure it is under the limit.

I bought a...

Seagate Momentus ST9750420AS 750GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Am "burning it in" as we speak.

It fit just fine.

Was bummed I couldn't find any 1 TB Seagate HDDs at the store...

Thanks,

Debbie
