I would like to know how launchpad works. Is there a specific way that developers referred to the icons of a program that want them to show on launchpad?

For example games or the older version of Xcode which isn't a package. How launchpad recognizes that Xcode.app, instruments.app etc will show up on there?

X11 will no longer a part of OSX in Mountain Lion...so no worries there ;)

I don't know for sure, but my guess is that it just picks up whatever is in the applications folder. It probably also has a plist file somewhere to specify presentation.

I have some obscure, not app store bought apps..and they all appear in the launchpad fine...im guessing its just pulling from the applications folder.
