I have the ATV 2 JB. A friend saw it and wanted the same thing. Well, there's no JB for the ATV3 and so now the ATV2 is twice as expensive!

We poked around a bit and he got the Roku XD which is on sale everywhere right now. Just recently, Plex was accepted as an official "channel" on the Roku. So we installed that and he put Plex Sever on his PC (avail for Mac as well). Then he connected his 2TB drive containing all his media to the Plex Server box.

Now the Roku sees the server and streams his content. Mp4, AVI, MKV. And music and photos.

Roku plays mp4 and now recently MKV natively and the Plex Server converts AVI on the fly!

It's similar to XBMC. Works great. Plex has an iOS app that works great for 5 USD.

Because Plex supports DNLA, you can access your media library over the Internet from anywhere in the world using your iPhone, iPad, or MacBook. (or Other OS).

So now he and I will be connecting to his Plex Server while on the road. We both have iOS devices and MacBooks (pro and air).

He will get the ATV3 when 10.8 comes out to take advantage of he enhanced AirPlay features.

So I just thought I'd share this here if it helps anyone. Mods, if this is in the wrong forum, please move. (you not the thread... Kidding)
