Hi

I'm looking to venture into creating visuals that react with music, like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFXcQvdAe08

I've tried customisable visualizers like G-force (http://www.soundspectrum.com/g-force/)
but I want to get much deeper and ideally make my own from scratch so that I can create entirely unique works.

Can anyone give me some starting points on relevant software, programming language etc?

Depending on the look you want to achieve and/or your software strengths, this can be done in 3D or video editing software such as C4D or After Effects:
