I'm looking for a way to install working/bootable system via a 32gb USB key,
what's the best way of going about it?
I stress I am not seeking to create a USB installer of Lion.
I want to be able to use the USB key to bootup from on various different
intel macs.
Any help would be greatful.

Just select the USB device/partition as install medium during the installation. That’s what worked perfectly for me.

And you can boot via usb and use the usb drive as normal system?
I just want to be able to use as normal system and tech/sytems tools.

Not necessarily, depends on the speed of the drive. I have a 16GB drive with Lion I use for work and it's not noticeably slower.
