View Full Version : iPod Warranty Surprise

Hi everyone,

So the click wheel was getting stuck on my iPod mini today. I took it in to the Apple store to get it fixed, but I was told my warrantee had been voided, as there was visible damage to the iPod (I had unfortunately dropped it out of my cargo pants pocket shortly after I got it, causing a small dent in the corner - I've got issues with the mini's durability, but that's another point).

The damage is nowhere near the wheel, and they won't fix it, which sucks -- I know it's b/c they just can't swap something out & sell it as refurb, but they should be able to test it and try to find the source of the damage that causes it not to work.

I can kind of understand their point, but when a 1 foot drop causes the little piece of plastic on the bottom to pop off, you have to be a little more lenient with the "visual damage" clause. I've dropped my 1G down a flight of stairs, and it still works perfectly (albeit with much less battery life these days).

this is somewhat off topic but do you find that these "geniuses" can be arrogrant pricks at times? becuase i do, i feel like they never care to help me fix my hundreds or thousand of dollar investments in their products.

I know that we all want our products to be guaranteed by the manufacturer to withstand everything, but how many products are you aware of that include a hard disk and are designed to withstand falls? There are relatively few. Do you understand why? Are you familiar with the mechanics of a hard drive, especially the 1" ones?

Try taking it back again when someone else is working, or call Apple and see if you can send it in. It's a judgement call, and this particular employee decided not to help. It's understandable, but there's nothing wrong with going the extra mile. Someone else may help you anyway, as some of them are nice, some not so much.

So, if it fell out of your pocket and it was only a 1' drop, then you're 2-2 1/2 feet tall?

Here's a little advice. Don't deal with the Apple Store directly. Get on Apple's support page and have them send you a box to get it fixed. You'll have your iPod back in no time.

Yep, arrogant pricks is exactly what comes to my mind when i think of the genius bar, seriously. Maybe they just need to get out more. :/

Working retail, I can sya that if there is evidence of impact damage period, that will end up costing you. Just a fact of life of dealing with electronics.

At Tyson's they have always been good to me. Th only concern they had was seeing that Limewire had been installed.
