Highlighting Books From iBooks?

Hi there,

I am a new user for iBooks and my friend told me that i could highlight the book in-app and make notes. The question is, If i plug the iPad to my Mac, will the notes and highlights copied to my Purchased Book OR those notes and highlights available in iBooks only?
