Anyway to stop the mail app from checking mail when first opened?

I have all my mail accounts set to manual, but when I open the mail app, it keeps checking for unread emails. This is annoying! Can anyone point me to some instructions so that this behavior can stop? I only want to check mail when I press the refresh button.

Make sure Fetch New Data is off. Also touch the option itself and make sure push is off. If you're still getting messages when you open the app, then it must be normal.

It also makes sense to load emails when you open it. That's like going to your Gmail inbox and your unread messages being ready for you right there instead of having to click the refresh button.

No. There isn't a way to keep the app from checking new mail when the app is opened. I have been trying all sorts of configurations and nothing keeps the mail app from checking mail. I would like to have that option for work emails though.
