the only thing I don't like about the iPad music app that seems to be moving to all devices is that it doesn't highlight new podcasts with the little dot (or half-listened to ones with the half dot). Can anybody confirm or deny those dots existing in iOS 6?

That has been in older firmwares but it does look like the sounds screen has been reorganized in ios 6.

Can anyone tell me what happens when you try to email a dropped-pin location in Maps? In iOS 5 it emails using a Google maps link.

You get a link to http://maps.apple.com and a VCF card to the place.
The link opens in Google maps in Safari even though the link is maps.apple.com.

Don't know if anyone has noticed this but iOS 6 now has different menu bars (no not what your thinking, keep reading).

Here is "SchoolBook" (an iOS app for handling school schedules). You can pick the theme as seen in the attached images. Usually you change the theme and the Navigation bar (big bar with settings button at the top) would change (along with some other small differences). What's new here is the menu bar (small bar at the top displaying time and some other things) changes along with it. From what I recall in iOS 5 and below the menu bar wouldn't change.

That is so awesome!!!

I haven't found the following question neither in OS X ML or this one, but I'll ask here.

Anyone with iOS6 + ML has tried the iMessage app regarding "read status" ?

For Example:

Current:
I receive a iMessage in the iPhone, but I'm at my MacBook so a i choose to read in my MacBook.
After that I check my iPhone and still states I have an unread message.

What I'm asking:
Update read status on the iPhone if I have already read in the MacBook.

When using the navigation and the screen turns off and turning the screen on using the home button will display the current navigation route without having to unlock the phone. The screen also stays on when you're close to your destination. If you're still far it'll turn off the screen.

A navigation banner is displayed when outside of the maps app displaying the next route Directions.

Ahh, so it's dynamic! I hated it at first but now I'm getting used to it an actually like it. It blends in and seems less distracting which is something I'm sure they intended.

As an aside, I love being able to upload a picture from Mobile Safari!

Whoa newsflash! Seems like the banner notifications shrink the rest of the UI instead of covering over part of the top bar like it did before. This could be a sign that Apple's pushing UIs to be able to expand and contract vertically automatically, in preparation for a taller iPhone this fall.

Hell, I didn't even realize that! Good call!

[EDIT] It only seems to push the screen down for navigation (maybe because it gives you the double bar when navigating). All other banner notifications cover the menu bar as in iOS 5.

More for your viewing pleasure:
* Mail no longer shows you the progress of mail sending and it now immediately makes the sent whoosh sound (bummer) even though it's still sending.
* When going to spotlight the icons don't fade away. They still do when going back to the home screen (don't remember that being the case in iOS 5)
* Use as Wallpaper share option in Photos

Upgrade. People doing restores were having issues (how ironic is that!). I did an upgrade and everything works pretty well save not being able to search in Maps yet without using Siri (it crashes when typing the first letter) and the new Music UI having issues with white song text on the new white UI (which I do not like).

There doesn't seem to be any notification options for Maps yet. I just tried it while driving to work and that popped up as I was in another app (Instacast for those interested).

It's not worth it to me at this point. Maybe for a future update. I can see the benefit if you do walking or public transport to still be able to see direction while you're using another app.
But besides these banners, everything else works great. No issues with Maps, Music, App Store, FaceTime Settings... all is smooth after I Updated from iOS 5. Happy Happy Happy :)

Also, I'm extremely impressed with turn by turn in portrait mode. It's really easy to read and understand what is going on. I love that all minor road names are ignored (Google Maps I'm looking at you), spilt street names (<- Red Dr. | Green Dr. ->) are called out if along the route (super helpful in cities with street names that change often), and that the UI is hidden unless you tap the screen (never used Google Navigator so I don't know if they ripped that off). The only crappy thing currently is in my area satellite view is awfully blurry. Gotta get better image tiles out to the smaller cities/towns.

Also, I know we knew Apple was using OpenStreet map data but they specifically mention (http://gspsa21.ls.apple.com/html/attribution.html) Waze as well (the attributes aren't scrollable on Safari for Mac. It's mentioned right below Neighborhood data (c) Urban Mapping, 2012).

Interestingly, custom vibration patterns are actually already available in iOS 5; you just have to enable them as an Accessibility feature. Yes and no... Kirky29 was talking about custom alert vibrations. Not custom call vibrations.

Ahhh I did not know this! Could be more useful for me I guess, I always have my iPhone on silent mode. :)

Don't give in so easily.

I don't see a way. No way to create a group either that I can find.

You can hide your Facebook contacts though. However it'll show unified contacts if a contact is in your local contacts (address book). I was worried about that as half the people I keep in touch with on Facebook I didn't want in my main Contacts. It's actually nicely done. Any Facebook field has the Facebook logo and you can unify contacts (link two or more) at the bottom of all the fields.

I really wish iPhoto for iOS had an annotation function.

I may be wrong, but custom vibrations only worked when receiving a phone call right? Is it possible that it is now for all alerts (SMS, email, etc) in iOS 6? If you look at the "200 new features" slide during the keynote, "Custom Vibrations for Alerts" is listed as one of the new features, which means it was possibly improved. Again, I never actually used custom vibrations before so I might be wrong.

Trust me, I wished they spaced them out as well or made play have a larger touch sweet spot. I always hit forward by accident.

Update on Navigation:

It's slick as hell.
* Road names that you're turning onto are in blue, street names you can turn onto are in green.
* The road you are on is under your position in blue.
* Whenever you approach a turn it goes from 3D view to overhead view to give you a clear view of the turn then back again after the turn is completed.
* Direction road signs fly up and away and another flies in from underneath to take it's place when completing a step.
* You can't have hybrid (satellite + road names) or satellite map tiles while navigating (turn by turn).
* Siri continues to give directions while on the phone even if using a headset (she transfers to the headset). Obviously she gives directions if music/podcasts/audio is playing (volume is lowered slightly and she is REALLY loud)
* Being able to say, "take me home" and have her start to navigate to your home address is beautiful. You really don't need to touch it at all.

That turn-by-turn IS really slick!
I've used TomTom, Garmin, a bunch of others, all but Google Navigator and this is easily the simplest and most elegant turn by turn out there. If Garmin isn't scared they ought to be. The only reason to use any other navigator is for offline navigation. If Apple adds that (and I really hope they do ... although it may cache the route), those companies are boned.

Does it work in landscape mode too? That's how I always use my iPhone as a GPS.

I live in Lebanon, and I rely a lot on Google Maps for the street names and small details... But from the few previews I've seen of Apple Maps, they seem to be very minimalistic and limited on the naming.

Just kidding :D Thanks for your speedy response. May I also ask if it's somewhat battery efficient? I realize that GPS Navigation will kill an iPhone's battery regardless of what app you're using, but I know for a fact that my battery is nice and strong, but running Waze literally takes off 1-2% per minute if I don't have it connected to power.

I read somewhere that it turns the screen on and off when the phone is locked, depending on if you have a turn coming up or not. Or something like that, I can't remember.

Thanks again!

Yeah voice prompts still gets read out loud when the display is off. Also, I was on the phone through my car on Bluetooth and the next direction was read out lout too. I'm sure when listening to music it would do the same. This appears to be a good replacement for standalone navigation units. But the maps do load slow and could be due to it being beta

Navigation
As far as I can tell it doesn't cache routes. It may but I'm not driving far enough out to be out of cell range. If you turn on Airplane mode Maps stops navigating and tells you to turn Airplane mode off to continue navigation.

Whoever was asking about battery life. Hard to tell as I've been using the heck out of it. Does seem to charge slowly while navigating. I'm guessing navigation is even more of a battery hog.

Music
Also one super slick thing about the new Music app. I'm driving down the road rocking out with my son and notice that the volume and seek radio chrome sliders are pulsing. If you tilt the phone (stand it up then slowly lay it down to see effect) the sliders turn back and forth. Nice touch almost no one would notice.

Hard to tell in a screenshot but they two chrome sliders are slight different:

Safari
Also just realized that mobile Safari on the iPhone finally puts a new tab next to the one your using and not at the end.

Also, thanks to iDB.com for this one, you'll now have a history for back and forward on the iPhone and iPod touch by holding the respective buttons down( back/forward). This is already on the iPad in iOS 5.1

Wallpaper behind the web pages (when you pull on them) is linen and no longer grey on iPhone/iPod touch

The more I play with iOS 6 the more I think it's one of the biggest updates yet.

In reminders, the little arrow on the right side that lets you add a time or place for the reminder is seen right away when you start typing. Previously it only showed once you pressed "submit"/enter and then you could go back and press the arrow to add those.

I don't know if anybody's made this connection, but the new dialer is a play straight out of the Google Voice app.

The color of the buttons look similar, but other than that not really. I've gotta say; Google Voice is hideous. I'll never understand how they can make great looking apps like Google+ and then make Google Voice look so awful.

I didn't put it on my iPhone yet, but installed it on my iPad, and I don't really use Calendar on the iPad... but it does allow you to show Facebook events and Facebook birthdays. I can't tell you if anything changed in the settings because I just don't know what the settings were before. Looks pretty much identical to screenshots I see of iOS5 calendar.

That's not true. Some do, some don't.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned this? Someone PLEASE tell me if contacts FINALLY have photos.

Also could someone search Osaka, Japan and show me what the map looks like? A search both in English and a search in Japanese possible?

Also when are we going to be able to bookmark app searches?

Finally, is it possible to COPY ALL text when reading an email? Not in an email that is in REPLY state but an email that is just in READ state. iOS4 was fine but iOS5 had an issue with the copy all function in email in READ state..

Does the new Apple maps only have bigger cities covered by Flyover, or do they have lesser-known cities too (like Budapest for instance)?

Google Street View is amazing but in some countries it doesn't even exist. Moreover, I only use it on a computer, probably not an an iPhone as it is too fiddly for that. Does Apple maps seem to cover as much as Google's street view?

Also, is there satellite view?

Just checked, and both are unchanged. Still no lyrics, and still that red line scrubber. :(

I don't know why we can't add/edit lyrics on the iPad - it's plenty big enough. But at least displaying them would be nice. Guess the engineers at Apple don't listen to music on their iPads?

I reckon Apple are planning on making the look more like iPad/Mac, as if you look at most of the new apps on iOS6 they look similar to the iPad and have a new silver/black theme. I think this looks very cool and will consolidate the look of all 3 platforms, which is very cool.

Hoping Google's announcement last week had some truth to it and they'll do a Google Maps app or add the street view functionality to the Google Earth app.

I'm really happy about Apple's new mapping services but having competition should only mean a win for the consumers.

Yes

Edit: Just made sure it wasn't going off of a pin that I had at that time, and I can confirm that is does it automatically based off of your ACTUAL location, not a pin.

Yep, seems to be an as-the-crow-flies distance measurement.
What I've kind of wanted was the ability to measure the distance between any two points. Still, it's cool that Maps will now tell me how far I am from a given point. I can stand outside and measure the distance to the other side of the street. Edit: It seems that it won't tell me how close I am to any neighboring points, but it will tell me how far I am from the nearest cross-street (300 ft).

I have iOS 6 if you guys want me to post something specific

Could you check if they've added the age old "smart dial" feature that existed on my HTC Tilt Fromm like 2005? If you start entering a contact's name by pushing the corresponding number key the app would bring matching contacts and you then just tap and dial. Much much faster and frankly a bare necessity considering the basic function of the device is making phone calls.

Ever since the first iPhone one has to tap on contacts inside the dialer app and go to the top then search for a contact then… it's just totally non-apple like. Not simple.

Since you can now open apps using Siri, does this mean it is possible to say "Open sparrow and send an email to..." or something like that? Using Siri to perform an action that an app is capable of (at least a basic function like email). Is there an API that would allow developers to levy Siri in this way?

I've been wondering if I should update to iOS 6 Beta. For those who have updated to it, how is the performance and stability? And, do all these apps work for you? For example, BBC News, Bloomberg, Y! I tested the first 4 versions of the beta releases on iOS 4 and majority of the apps couldn't work back then.

How odd that Safari still has separate url and search fields.

I reckon it's a UI thing with the layout of the results and suggestions. If you look at the Safari Mac beta the list you get when you start typing can be quite long, so on a phone there would be a lot of scrolling needed. Keeping the functions divided into two shortens the length required to display everything.

Your personal contact information is in a lighter shade than the rest when you are going thru the contacts list. I dont think this was that way before. Also a little profile head next to it.

In mail, contacts , Calendars settings, you can choose default alert times for birthdays, events, and all day events - for example, I have mine set up to remind me a day before any birthdays, 30 minutes before any event and no alert for all day events. This is a big time saver for me as I enter a lot of events on the iPad.

One other annoying thing is when you look at a single app then go back to the main store app listings the store takes you right to the top of the listings again. So if you were 4 pages into the apps you'd have to browse from the top all over again.

Does anyone know if this has been fixed? For example, go 3 pages into the top free apps and click an app to read its description. Then exit out of that description and see if you stay where that app was in the store listings or if the store takes you all the way to the beginning again. Also try this in the Genius listings too if you could be so kind.

Thanks

...maybe I am doing this wrong but this does NOT happen in IOS 5. If I read the description of the app and then exit back to the list - it stays exactly where I was before I read the description.

I can't seem to get turn by turn GPS data on my iPhone 4S in Canada. All I get is an overview of the route. Siri doesn't dictate the turns either. Anyone else experiencing this. Installed using the restore method.

Same problem here. Turn by turn doesn't run in full screen like the preview page on apple.com and doesn't run on the lockscreen either. Also, no traffic data.

Edit: Also in Canada on the iPhone 4S.

Was this mentioned? Apps now have the full version history (with release notes) available from their page on the App Store:

Looks good, can't wait to update! At the same time I'm hesitant to upgrade right away because x.0 releases are almost always buggy with Apple.

I dig the new dark look they've got going on, Can't wait to update the App store on the iPad, so obnoxious downloading apps and having it push you out to the home screen. Whoever thought that was a great idea should be fired!

Hopefully they'll spread the dark look more across the UI and reduce/eliminate the baby blue look.

Thanks guys for all the screen shots.

Also - not having the AppStore App close each time an App is downloaded is good.

Hey there,
I made a list after a lot of search on the web with all the features and the small details of iOS 6 Beta i came across. I took some pictures of you to make this list, and i have all the sources at the end of the page.

You can find the list here (http://bit.ly/ios6list). If you like it then share it away, and also if you have some more features or small details you have found comment in this post or send me an email.

I imagine it boosts bass and treble and reduces the dynamic range to improve low volume listening.

yes.

and besides, the notifications are there even without turning off Do Not Disturb, its just that the screen doesnt turn off.

So if you were to go into notification center during do not disturb, all your notifications would be there

App update download and install progress now shows in store, with option to open when complete.

Turn by turn works in the UK. 3D works everywhere i.e. the map tilts but there are no 3D buildings/terrain that I can find anywhere

San Francisco, Sydney. Those are the only ones I've seen. It will be some time before we know which cities have it since Apple didn't give us a list.

It's worth noting that the map app crashes quite a bit when moving around in 3D. Not surprising given its a beta.

I have an iPod touch 4th gen, still on iOS 5.1.1 (as I'm not able to get iOS 6) but after searching for an app, downloading it, and returning to the search results, the list of apps was white and looked exactly like the new app store list view in iOS 6. It had the "Open" button instead of "Installed," but the bars were still blue. I'm guessing it was a bug or glitch that caused it to come up that way, but it was weird. Since the App Store is online is it even possible it could have showed me an iOS 6 view or could it have just been a bug in iOS 5.1.1? I should've taken a screenshot, but as soon as I touched the screen, it snapped back to the normal view. Any thoughts?

No.

What they need to add is either a toggle in Notification Center (I don't see that happening) or integration with Calendar so you can have it turn off automatically when in a scheduled meeting, for instance.

They need to add Sunday-Saturday scheduling anyway as all you can do now is tell it the time to always turn Do Not Disturb on and off. I have mine set for 8pm-4:45am but I want to extend that on weekends as I don't get up till 7:30a.

It doesn't look it in pictures but when in motion Maps is actually pretty impressive. It's fluid and the vector images are just crisp. When you zoom in all the way in satellite mode it retains that level of detail when you zoom out unlike Google Maps. Docs in the cloud works peachy. Great implementation! There can be more options depending on file type and apps you have.

yea you need the new combox which started mid 2010...adds many new ios features like bluetooth streaming, Pandora integration (run Pandora on iphone and it connects to idrive where you have full control of app from idrive), BMW Apps (Facebook, twitter, news, etc), send Google maps to car...an it looks like with iOS 6 we might get full Office support which means among other things texting via voice.
