If there was a way to lock the sim tray, you'd be able to buy some decent time in the event of theft. If they reset your phone (as in situation #1) and you have a passcode to unlock, well then the thief is in the same predicament when they tried to shut the phone off in the first place.
Something like a custom sim tray that has a custom screw (similar to what Apple has in place at the bottom of the iPhone which requires a special tool) that you can swap out with the iPhone's default sim tray could be useful. The thief could have the special tool required to open the tray, but at least it would buy you some more time and generally it is going to be a good deterrent. You'd have to purchase this sim tray, so most phones won't have it. When the thief steals your iPhone with the custom tray and notices they can't quickly pop the sim, it might just annoy them enough to leave/ditch the phone.
I think that the passcode to power off could feature could be very useful, but not until someone comes up with a way to tamper proof the sim from being removed.

Often I forget where i saved an app so normally I use spotlight to go quickly to that app. Now when you do that the name of then folder your app is in appears alongside it in the search results.

Wow 27 pages lol...
Hopefully not mentioned already:
1: "New" badge on new downloads in either books or home screen after downloading a new app
2: Do Not Disturb has a automatic timer setting so that my iPad doesn't go off at 3am with emails (wife's favorite feature)
3: Safari has pretty much unlimited tabs now (soooo happy)
4: after a full charge in usage it shows usage time... I LOVE that feature.. I've been waiting for it
On a bad side
1: The app store BLOWS.. It's got nice features, like the purchased overhaul is great. But I haven't upset figured out how to view more than about 8 reviews on a app.

Oh god I love this! I often use spotlight when I can't find an app. At least now I know where I put it!

3: Safari has pretty much unlimited tabs now (soooo happy).
I wish people would specify iPad or iPhone. I was thinking Safari on the iPhone finally allowed more tabs.
But no: Safari on the iPhone has the same 8 tab limitation as it has always had (ugh).
On the iPad you can have up to 25 tabs (not quite unlimited but welcome!).

I use a jailbreak app called "Icaughtu" which prevents the device from being powered down unless the code is entered. Once again the jailbreak community is ahead of Apple.

While the "progress" it presents is useless, having a visual indicator that the message actually went through is helpful (for SMS, not iMessage where it gives the Delivered tag).

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but auto-brightness, for me at least, now works on the lock screen where before it would always be at full brightness and then dim or brighten after unlocking depending on surrounding light. Does this mean that the ambient light sensor is now pulling in light constantly? Can anyone confirm or deny?

1- Does it? That's strange!! Because on my 4S, when i press and hold sleep button and home button at the same time, it powers OFF the phone. I have to press sleep button to turn the phone ON again. Does this happen to anyone else?
3 & 4. Quite right. However, lots of people get mugged while they use their phone, or get their phones snached, on which cases the passcode is not active yet.
On the unrelated subject i have a question. How frequently does apple push the beta updates on the iOS.

That is true.... however you get (i get) bugs that i don't get when the phone is unjailbreaked. My 4s is jailbroken and sometimes it makes me want to reverse that back. I like nice features but i love stability.

Having a passcode to power down your iPhone still won't do any good if your phone was lost/stolen and you wanted to track it on Find my Phone . There is many ways the wrong hands can prevent you from doing that....
1) They can power down the phone by presing Screen/home button at the same time.
2) They can take out the micro sim card.
3) They can switch ON the "Aeroplane Mode"
4) They can switch OFF the "Location Services"
To be honest, i personally think that find my phone is only useful on very few ocasions.... when you missplaced/lost your phone and some honest person found it. But on most ocasions when iPhones get stolen, it won't be any good.... except from wiping out all data remotely.
How can they do any of that if it is locked with a passcode? Apart from the home and power button of course.

Does anyone know whether it is possible in iOS6 to set an iCloud alias as the default send address in Mail, rather than having it always default to the username? I never use my username as an email address and it's extremely annoying having to manually change the send address to an alias every time I compose a new email!

Agreed. Also, some areas when there are a lot of people on the network (sporting events, fairs, etc.) the data doesn't work or barely works on the 3G network, but dropping back to EDGE makes it work with no problems. Hopefully they're just removing it temporarily to make for an EDGE/3G/LTE switch, to be released with this year's iPhone.
But unfortunately, I have a hunch that it'll get the axe completely.

Yes, that's one of the mayor flaws I saw on this Preview.
They should get that switch back. On 5.1.1 I always had 3G on, but occasionally I would switch to EDGE because I knew I needed that extra battery life for the day.

Jun 18, 2012, 10:51 AM
Battery life usually sucks in the first couple of betas. It's been that way since beta 3. Also it doesn't suck for everyone. I unplug from charge at 100% at 6.30am, I have pretty much the same things in use that you list, I listen to music for about 3 hours, a good few hours of FB, browsing, messing around, take a few pics, mess with instagram. I get home at 8pm with about 40% battery left, that's been every day of iOS 6 so far, apart from the first day of use.
I have seen the same. To be honest I almost feel that battery life is a little better than iOS 5. I use my phone just as I did before. The only caveat to that is that maps really do suck a lot of juice right now. Aside from maps though I feel the battery life is similar to possibly better
----------
That's pretty cool. I never thought to try that.
Tell us what happens if you go from wifi to cell. I have always had issues with that with music streaming apps. It always seems fine going cell to wifi, but going wifi to cell it never seems smart enough to switch smoothly

Yep. Just like turn-by-turn. Not sure why though.
It's pretty processor intensive, even on a 4S. Add satellite imagery and it starts to slow down. The 4 would probably have unacceptable lag.
I did confirm that navigation caches the route and maps. I was way out in a national park and lost all signal and Siri was still routing me even once the cached maps ran out (see attached picture)
Oh and charging while navigating is atrocious. I started out at 80% and had it charging the entire 1.5hr drive and when I unplugged the phone it was down to 20%. I'm sure Apple will fix that.

I rarely scale back my 3G connection to EDGE but I agree that it's a good option to have.

Sometimes I'm in an email back and forth and I wanna send a photo in a reply, I have to go from email to home screen, into photos, locate the photo, copy it, go back to email and paste it. In iOS 6 I can just insert image straight there saving time and effort....
Many people have been asking for this for years. It's great to have this function. You can still do your complicated way tho so all good....

I thought you meant the new popup menu insert picture or video was badly implemented. I love it!
I just reread what you said. Oops! Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I was kinda puzzled by your reply as you do seem quite a sensible fella Lol. No worries :) I love the new thing, much needed. So many little things that tons of people on the forum have been nagging for for years have been included in iOS 6 that's it's almost like they've been noseying at the wish lists on here lol

Could someone check this in iOS 5 for me?
I thought I'd ask how long it'd take to fly somewhere. Siri got it totally right.
Now, does it only work because I'm the UK, and the UK now has directions etc? Or is this new to iOS 6? Or have I completely missed this feature?

That looks like it's getting it from wolfram alpha so I reckon it would work in iOS 5. It deffo has nothing to do with directions as that's turn by turn sat nav, totally different thing.

First of all, does the UK have directions *yet* on iOS6? I'm still on iOS5 so I can't check. Also, I just asked it 'How long does it take to fly from London to Melbourne?' on Siri iOS5 iPhone 4S and it said the same. I even tried Manchester to Barbados.

Oh and charging while navigating is atrocious. I started out at 80% and had it charging the entire 1.5hr drive and when I unplugged the phone it was down to 20%. I'm sure Apple will fix that.
Wow! I hope Apple fixes that. Losing that much battery power even on the charge? If you didn't have your phone plugged in, the battery would have been flat in 20-30 minutes.
They have to fix that, losing battery power while plugged in is unacceptable.

For a while now, the fetch schedule can be set as 15 minutes, 30 minutes, hourly, or manually.
Are these settings the same in iOS 6?
As you may know, Gmail/IMAP is fetch only. I use Gmail/IMAP for my Google Apps email because it (1) gives me the ability to delete messages and (2) syncs my Inbox more accurately. I have problems with both when I use Exchange. It would be great if I can fetch at smaller intervals.

Little confused by your question but here goes:
You can set calls from either "favorites" or "everyone" to come through in DND mode. You cannot allow messages or any other alert to do that. They are simply waiting for you to wake the phone. DND basically disables the phone from lighting up the lock screen for alerts...

as others have said, not sure why you would want less than 15 minutes for "Fetch" on email. Fetch schedule is for when push is either not active, or not supported. Push means messages come through as received, regardless the schedule. Fetch means messages only come through when "fetched" by the phone. a shorter duration fetch schedule means your phone would constantly be pinging the servers looking for new messages. i can imagine that would give a serious hit to your battery life.
all that being said, there are no new "Fetch" options for schedule in iOS6.

Don't know if this has been recognized yet but, Siri doesn't sound so abormal when saying certain things anymore. For example, she used to say "I found-this-for-YOU" and it just didn't sound right... She speaks more "normal" now. (Except for the fact that every beta tester seems to have that iOS 5 bug where she sounds more robotic for some users, like a compressed LQ version. Most people think this is an iOS 6 beta bug but many people have this issue on iOS 5 they just don't know it because she comes like that out of the box for some people. A lot of times network settings reset and a reboot will fix it (on iOS 5).

I've noticed a few things about iOS6 that hint at a taller screen for the next iphone.
1. notifications.( I know this came out in iOS 5 but it adds to my theory)
Currently the notification banners pop up and cover over the status bar and about half of the top buttons for any app. I alwys thought it was a weird design for apple. So I figure with the next iphone, those banners will move up because of the new taller screen.
2. iTunes store app.
When you preview a song in iOS 6, you can now listen to it the entire time within the app, and out of the app. The only thing is that within the app, there is a bar covering up part of the screen on top showing you the song is playing. That hinders screen real estate. With the next iphone's taller screen, it wont hinder the real estate as much.
3. Navigation system
Like someone else pointed out, the banners for navigation in the lock screen shrink the rest of the screen, instead of covering it like the current banners. Since navigation is new to iOS 6, those banners were probably designed with the taller screen in mind, instead of the smaller one.

Thanks for confirming. As for fetch vs. push, I stated the 2 reasons in my original post why I choose to use IMAP (fetch) over Exchange (push) — (1) ability to delete as opposed to archive and (2) more accurate inbox. However, you brought up a good point about impact on the battery life... I hadn't thought of it that way. Thanks for that, too.

Yes, it gives stats for the "English pruh-meer soccer" league. Funnily enough I tested it by asking the exact question that someone else just mentioned: "How tall is Wayne Rooney?"
----------
Something I noticed just this morning (apologies if it has already been mentioned): In the newly redesigned iTunes store you can listen to a sample and then browse somewhere else and the sample you're listening to will continue to play in its own little pop-up player.
This is great as I used to get impatient and want to browse other stuff but as soon as you did the sample would stop playing.

With DND enabled the only time your phone does anything is if some one on the list you create calls you. Text or any other notifications does not come through period. the phone doesnt light up or vibrate, if it did either it would defeat the purpose of it.
This is explained in the Keynote as well.

Well, they actually do come through. But the second part is right: DND just keeps the phone from vibrating and the screen from lighting up. If you wake the iPhone, all your messages and notifications will be there waiting.

In testing I've found that her grammar needs some work with a few of the new capabilities (sports and movies).

That's what I meant by her grammatical mistakes. The new sports and movies information has some mistakes as well:
When asked the score of the Mariners game, she replied "Seattle are winning 4-2." Her canned responses just need to be proofread.

Well, they actually do come through. But the second part is right: DND just keeps the phone from vibrating and the screen from lighting up. If you wake the iPhone, all your messages and notifications will be there waiting.
Yeah I stated that poorly sorry.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this one yet.
In the Music app, when you back out of a Now Playing song with the arrow in the upper-left hand corner, the Songs list now displays the song you're listening to.
In previous iterations, it would always default to the very top of your song list, songs beginning with letter A, now it will bounce around to whatever letter and song is currently playing.

No I don't think that's an iOS 6 thing. That is what normally happens with me, and I'm on iOS 5
----------
The stocks app now displays the stock volume in portrait mode below the price chart. This was only available in landscape mode, if I'm not mistaken.
Also, notice it says "Live Quote" instead of "Quotes delayed by 20 minutes". Again, not sure if the second pic is iOS 5...
Stocks app on iOS 5 sometimes includes Live Quote instead of the delayed 20 minutes quotes. But you're right about the second pic... it is from iOS 5 (no volume info in portrait mode)

I did confirm that navigation caches the route and maps. I was way out in a national park and lost all signal and Siri was still routing me even once the cached maps ran out (see attached picture)

Just noticed.
Apple *removed* the 3G/EDGE switch (both on iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s)
Hopefully it will find its way back, especially in rural countryside its easier to switch to Edge right away (saves battery and gets better reception)
I'm pretty sure this isn't going to be coming back. They already tried to ax it with 5.0 on the 4S but brought it back with 5.1 because people complained.
BUT there is a technical reason behind it: with 4G LTE becoming more prevalent now and soon to be ubiquitous, the carriers (at least those in the U.S.) have openly announced they are going to be shutting down their EDGE network in the near future to repurpose the spectrum/frequencies it runs on to be used for LTE/3G to accommodate for the greater demand of data services. This could very well happen before iOS 7. If they don't remove it now, they'd have to with 6.1 or something. If you don't have an EDGE network to connect to, turning off 3G would be you would have NO connection whatsoever.
When EDGE gets turned off, you shouldn't have any need to flip the toggle as the idea is that the EDGE network you would have been trying to connect to would then be 3G/LTE anyway. Again, that's just the idea, though. We'll have to see if it works that way in practice.
But get used to it. The 3G toggle likely ain't coming back. Now the LTE iPhone may have an LTE toggle to replace it, though...

I think it will happen sooner for AT&T. I have seen a dramatic increase in areas that less than a year ago still only had EDGE and now are 3G. In fact I can barely find an EDGE-only area anymore--even in the middle of the desert which recently had just voice.
Plus, AT&T started informing 2G users this March that the devices will be incompatible with its network in the near future.
That said Apple could very much make this a carrier decision, as they have done in the past. So if AT&T doesn't need it, they can turn it off. Other carriers can leave it available.

Can anyone check if Apple Maps has updated its map of Africa yet? In the presentation, they had the map of the world, but it had one huge glaring error: it didn't count South Sudan as being separate from Sudan, even after they are now recognized as an independent country.
Small thing, I know, but it would really help to know how accurate/updated Apple Maps are, compared to the gold standard (Gmaps).

That's the problem with 3's network it's only 3G
Talk time on 3G is a lot less than on 2G so that saves battery, also when there's no 3G signal or say only 1 bar, you can switch to 2G usually.

Your post is so US centric it hurts.
Just because it may be happening in the U.S. earlier than it will in other countries does (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/07/28/eu_refarming/) not (http://www.telecoms.com/26739/eu-agrees-technical-rules-for-using-lte-devices-on-gsm-frequencies/) mean (http://www.fiercewireless.com/europe/story/rising-german-mobile-data-usage-triggers-call-2g-refarming/2012-05-04) it isn't (http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2010/5/21/business/6308397&sec=business) going (http://mobile.engadget.com/2011/04/22/european-commission-mandates-lte-and-wimax-on-900mhz-and-1800mhz/) to happen (http://www.telecomsmarketresearch.com/resources/Spectrum_1.shtml). Some countries it's already under way, others are trying to let it not effect current 2G customers, yet others don't think it's a good idea at all. Some are using it for 3G right now, others waiting to use it for LTE. Most are trying to disguise it by only talking about it in frequency terms (900MHz) instead of the layman's "2G" label. But it *is* happening right this very second in places outside the U.S.

That would be an unwise thing to do, they should make the most of the beta period to correct as many errors as possible before launch and they'll need our help for that.
Also why do they currently have an error report option if they're only using sample data?

Because, as it's a Developer beta, not a public beta, they're testing the coding and api's for the map app and apps that connect to it, not testing to see what ocean is wrongly labelled and whatnot. Any other errors are a bonus.

OK, not sure if this has been reported, as I'm not going to wade through 38 pages!
My wifi at home is provided by a rubbish captive portal which requires logging in every hour. Under iOS 5, if I connected to wifi, but didn't browse to a webpage (in order to get redirected and enter my user/pass) then the wifi would remain active (wifi icon on) but nothing would work, no emails, apps failing to connect etc.
Under iOS 6, connecting to the wifi network brings up a browser for me to enter my credentials automatically. If I don't enter my credentials, the wifi icon *doesn't* appear, 3G remains active, and all my apps can connect, even though wifi shows as connected to that network in the wifi screen.
tldr, iOS6 seems to actually check web connectivity when wifi is enabled before switching to use it instead of the 3G connection.

I went from Android to iPhone earlier this year. I really like the iPhone, slick as snot and works flawlessly. BUT the one thing I miss is the Google Maps Navigation. NOTHING in the App store even comes close to it, not by a mile, and I have tried them all. I was not aware when I got the iPhone that it's version of Google Maps was different and did not navigate. That is one thing that I truly miss so I have high hopes that Apple is going to do it right. Please! So far what I've read sounds good, screen shots look good.
For those of you that have never had an Android or used that version of Google Maps for navigation, trust me, Apple has its work cut out for them to top it or even match it and I hope they do. Looking forward to IOS6!

This is huge!
Is no-one but me is excited by this? I hate typing up an email and then realizing I have to copy/paste the whole thing after I start again from the Photos app.
Why are you starting an email again from the Photos app? Just click over to the Photos app, copy the photo and then paste it in your original email.

And so you want the OP to waste all of HIS time putting a massive list together just for your convenience? You should really think before you speak. (Or in this case... Type)

the OP could start with this and then add anything else thats missing.

Ok. So, we have a good starting point for an iOS 6 "All the little things" or Changelog of sorts. Now, to put it somewhere where anyone can add to it. Someplace like a ...wiki. Possibly one that is part of MRs perhaps.
http://guides.macrumors.com/iOS_6_Changelog
Remember to read the instructions if your going to edit it. MediaWiki is a little funky as far as how to edit the text, and nothing like the forums.
Within about 15 minutes a link should be in the iOS 6 forums header.

I wish they could somehow make it so that we can sample the songs from there too, not just buy it.

Hi guys,
I dug through these pages during weekend, but I think I got one, that wasn't mentioned:
When you have "fetching of remote-images" switched off in email settings, now you get a "load all images" button at the end of each email that contains remote images.
I was pretty excited over that one ... i find that really handy for the few html-emails that you do want to see in all their glory. (a feature already existant for a while in OSXs desktop mail client btw)
and some detail on one that has been mentioned as "improved keyboard layouts" on the wiki page -the german keyboard layout now features german umlauts as separate keys again (this popped up in iOS5 beta phase iirc, but then was canned again for the release version)
cheers

Address Book.
There are photos for contacts of course but only in single profile view. When you view your list of contacts there are no photos. Only a text list of names. Other address books and 3rd party iOS address books have had photos on the contact list for years. I don't understand why its taken this long for iOS and OSX Address Book.
Please tell me this is finally in iOS 6.

The bringing up a browser thing happened to me in iOS 5, possibly 4 too if I remember right, it would only do
It if I didn't leave the wifi menu too quickly, otherwise it hit me in safari.
Yes but it was hit or miss, especially for remembered WiFi networks.
Travelling to an airport, for instance, that used a captive portal was a pain. I would get off a plane and hurry to shoot off an email only to find it didn't send as the iPhone had auto-joined the airport's WiFi network but didn't pop up the captive portal agree-to page. Ugh, I hated that!
I always felt it was a little crazy to switch from a working 3G data connection to a non-working WiFi connection.
With iOS 6 it seems to check for Internet connectivity, and seems to better handle captive portals.
It's not perfect, but much better. As an example, if I am connected to my home wifi network but then unplug the ethernet cable from the access point, my iPhone will not realize it has no Internet access. Checking the weather--or anything else that needs Internet--will fail. However, if I leave the house (out of wifi range) and come back it will not switch to the (internet-less) wifi network. Before iOS 6 it would connect even though there was no internet access, which I found to be a real pain (especially for things like iMessage).

New 'Open In' options when viewing photos in iMessage, allows you to open the photo in any app that supports it. Hopefully this will make its way to the Photos.app! :)

Hi all. I'm a real newb here. New to my 3 week old iPad 3 and new to the world of Apple if you don't count my iPod 5g and a very brief journey with the original iMac. My desktop and laptops are all Wintel machines and my phone is a droid.
I've been reading about iOS 6 and all it's features so far. My query is should I try iOS 6 beta or wait until final release? I'm pretty tech savvy but don't want to regret anything. Comments ?? Thanks for your patience and if this has been addressed before I apologize as I must have missed it. If it has then a kind pointing me to that posting(s) would be appreciated. Thanks.
I will say that my decision to go Apple with a tablet is one I am NOT regretting. Heck I can see where my next laptop would quite possibly be a Mac!

As you are not a Developer, you should NOT run beta software. Not only can it have unintended consiquences, but it is also illegal. There is no legal way to download or install the beta. Discussion past this point is also against the Macrumors policy.

Thank you for the reply. I am a newbie as stated so was unaware of how beta OS works in this world. I'll read on and look forward to a final public release which I gather I can then get if I so wish.
I do hope you all understand I don't come from the Apple world and thus have a lot to learn.

Hmm maybe you can now enable-disable location service while on wifi and by disable it removes the pop-up that ask "enable wifi to improve accuracy”.
