Do old Mail accounts take up space?

I do not have much space on my computer after upgrading to an SSD. My old Gmail account that I deleted from Mail is quite large (5 GB). Does Mail keep the messages on my computer in its storage somewhere after it deletes the account? If so, I would like to delete the messages to free up space. Thanks.
