Apple has released an update (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1544) to all Macs with Thunderbolt ports, adding support for the new Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter. The update weighs in at 520KB and requires OS X Lion 10.7.4. It can be downloaded from Apple's software update page (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1544).
About Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2.1
Adds support for the Apple Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD463).The update is a replacement for Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2, which was released last week but was pulled by Apple after users reported boot failures (http://www.macrumors.com/2012/06/12/thunderbolt-software-update-1-2-causing-boot-failures-for-some-users/) upon installing the update. Apple has posted a support article (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4303) addressing the issue with instructions on how to resolve the boot problems.

MBA 13 2012 says this machine doesn't support the update or something to that extent.

I just checked on my mid-2011 iMac, and I don't have any updates. Although even if I did, after getting a kernel panic on my mid-2011 iMac for installing the last update similar to this (http://www.macrumors.com/2012/06/12/thunderbolt-software-update-1-2-causing-boot-failures-for-some-users/), I don't think I'll be installing this one. Plus, I don't even need it on an iMac since an Ethernet port is present. Thanks, but no thanks, Apple!

The last time I update Thunderbolt make my Macbook Pro had to restore 3 times. In the next day, Apple pull out the update of Thunderbolt from their page. My Macbook Pro is middle of 2011.

Any idea when the TB to FW adapter is coming? That one's more important to me than the TB to GE one.

Yeah I agree. I don't like accessing my hard drives via USB 2.0.

My system doesn't show it in Software Update. I have a MBA 2011 and I have already got TB update 1.2 installed with a Thunderbolt GB Ethernet Adaptor currently working flawlessly.

Same thing here with MBP. It seems we who had better luck with the original release don't need this one.

Didn't someone just release a port replicator that does USB and FW?

More updates already than available devices.
But it's great they take care of maintaining TB.

So is this simply a substitute for the previous thunderbolt update for the same purpose?

Yeap! It most likely just fixes the kext problem of the previous update that caused kernel panics on some systems.

What about a TB to phone coupler?

My iMac hasn't been sleeping well the past week or so. Software update installed the first TB update but not this one. I downloaded it and now my imac's sleeping peacefully.

I didn't get this through software update for my late 2011 MBP. Downloaded and installed it, but 1/2 way through installation, I thought "I have a built in 1GB ethernet port, so why am I installing this?" I can't imagine wanting to use 2 ethernet lines at the same time.
Thunderbolt to Esata would be great, but I don't want to pay the current $200 to $300. I bought an Esata drive from Other World Computing with an Esata adapter also from them to use with a 2008 MBP. About a year later they report that this adapter doesn't work with MBPs in the 15" range (couldn't figure out why my date kept corrupting)
Now I have a 3 TB drive that I can't hook up without spending 200 to 300.
Hopefully these will come down in price.
