View Full Version : My Avatar doesn't move

I want to update my Avatar on another forum I belong to. I found a website that has some animated ones, but when I downloaded it, it didn't move. I downloaded it by clicking Option and holding down the mouse key. Is this the correct way. I saved it to my hard-drive. When I opened the file, it opened in Quicktime, but didn't move anymore.

Sorry to sound like a total idiot, but what am I doing wrong.

Cheers, QB

Should be an animated .gif
Can you paste it into an .html file to see if it moves?
You could paste it in an .html format email and send it to yourself
Or you can upload it here in the forum to see as a test.

I'm not sure, but I think Preview is capable of showing animated gifs, isn't it. So you could try to open the file with Preview and see if it moves there.

GAK! Ugh! Animated Avatars are an aweful idea!
Animation takes away from the web page.
It is distracting. Baaahhd idea as my sheep would say!

Preview will show the frames of the animation, but not the actual animation...

... or just drag and drop it on the Safari icon. ;)

You want to open it in Safari rather than Quicktime. Select the icon, press ctrl-I, then under the "open with" menu choose "Safari". For good measure, you might as well select "change all".

An easier way would be to just drag the file onto a Safari icon, that will automatically open it up in Safari.

That will tell you if its an animated image or not.

That too... :o

Of course I'm at work and I'm in an XP world, so it would have to be IE :(

I don't think so at all - I think some of the coolest avatars are the animated ones. (Sometimes I get hypnotized by Mr. Anderson's, for instance!) Mind you, I have yet to use one myself on MR.... yet...

Sorry I shd have mentioned, I'm on 9.2 not 10. When I chose the Avatar it was animated. File has got .gif after it. Tried going to Outlook Express and sendiing it to myself, first I just clicked on the .gif on the desk top and did Edit Copy, went to Outlook and went Edit Paste, but that didn't work. It just pasted the Name of the File. Then tried it as an attachment, that showed the pic but not animated.

What am I doing wrong?

Try opening it with your web browser, even if its Explorer :o
Open your browser and on the menu go to -> File -> Open file -> and navigate to the .gif to open it.

If it opens, but doesn't move, then I would say you don't have the animation effects in the file. Try downloading the .gif again using a different method.

In his case though that won't work since he is a newbie.

Edit: My mistake, sorry, he was talking about an avatar on another forum - forgot that part... still early in the morning here... :o ;)
