so since upgrading to snow leopard then to lion now, my computer is virtually useless. completely lags. takes maybe 30 seconds to click. wheel all the time. took it into the store & they said my hard drive is failing. but nothing too major that would be causing this. and i need more ram. i currently have 2gb. so i cant really do anything on this. how long until a hard drive fails. does apple cover failing hard drives out of warranty? i forgot to ask. i realize i have to upgrade ram and hard drive at this point but are there any other options. really cant afford 300$ for a 250 ssd hard drive and another 100$ for 4gb of ram.

Backup your data and replace the HDD ASAP, that's your priority now.

The HDD might be covered under your warranty, ask them. If it is not, buy one yourself somewhere else and install it yourself.

Good 256GB SSDs can be had for €160 where I live.
4GB of RAM don't cost 100 bucks, more like 20.
