Hi I use iTunes match for my 10,000+ music library. For some time now I've been running very low on disc space and what to move my library to an external drive. However I have a few questions?

When I direct my iTunes to my external drive do I have to have the external drive all the time? I know that it will need to be attached when I want to work with the library but is this essential all the time, when I just want to look on the iTunes store for example?

Maybe there are better options now that I have iTunes match, however I do want a physical copy of my library somewhere?

Thanks in advance

As long as you don't want to listen to any music, it won't matter. I don't think iTunes will even try to find the files until you try to play a song.
