CNET has posted their list of Top 10 Web fads (http://www.cnet.com/4520-11136_1-6268155-1.html?tag=nl.e729). I guess I've been under a rock because I didn't know about mahir's site, but all 10 have been discussed in these forums over the last couple of years. Just for fun, I did searches in the forums to look for the oldest post that mentions the fad or a thread dedicated to the topic.1. Hampsterdance (http://www.hampsterdance.com/) (MacRumors mention)

2. Mahir (http://istanbul.tc/mahir/mahir/) (MacRumors mention)

3. All your Base are Belong to Us (http://www.planettribes.com/allyourbase/) (MacRumors thread)

4. Dancing Baby (http://burningpixel.com/Baby/BabyMus1.htm) (MacRumors mention)

5. Hot or Not (http://hotornot.com/) (MacRumors mention)

6. Friendster (http://www.friendster.com/) (MacRumors thread)

7. Ellen Feiss (http://ellenfeiss.net/) (MacRumors thread)

8. Star Wars Kid (http://www.jedimaster.net/) (MacRumors thread)

9. Blogger (http://www.blogger.com/) (MacRumors mention)

10. JibJab (http://jibjab.net/) (MacRumors thread)What important fads did they miss?

Two that I would have considered for the list:

* The Googlebomb "weapons of mass destruction" page (MacRumors thread)

* The Subservient Chicken (MacRumors thread)

Further proof that there is no god... or maybe that I'm just not hip as I've only heard of 3 of those. Whichever..

I've heard of most of them, heck! I've been on a T1 net connection since 1995. Except for Friendster and Hot or Not, I doubt those two and Bloggers could be considered fads. Mahir was hilarious when it first debuted.

I have you beat by 4 years.. and yet.. I've still never paid attention to webfads. I guess I've heard of 4 of them.. missed the "wonder" that is Friendster. I live in a cave. But I'm also the type of person that deletes email forwards without reading them. Will they never stop?

I almost said that I was the anti-blogger, because I don't care about people's opinions and sharing them.. and was immediately whalloped by the irony of posting that. So.. I won't.. wait, I just did.

Maybe it's because of this:

National Weather Service overnight report for Durham, NC (http://www.srh.noaa.gov/data/forecasts/NCZ025.php?warncounty=NCC063&city=Durham)

Overnight...Mostly clear. Lows in the mid 70s. Light and variable winds. Heat index values up to 102.

I have you beat by 4 years.. Hmmm... didn't you type 3 years? What's going on here? Don't tell me your brain is affected by the heatwave.

Well, porn isn't really a fad, is it? I mean, it's not going away any time soon (sorry Christian groups).

I did. But I first started using the Solaris system at college in 1991 (to MUD), not 1992.. hence.. 3 years -> 4 years.

Now that's a bandwagon I've never gotten off of.. <drumroll> <cymbal splash>

Well, I don't know, I can only remember to have seen about half of those, and the one on the first place was completely new to me... I'm most definitely not following the latest "fads"... Have regrettably been to Manhir's site before, though, there was some writing about that on some Norwegian news(!) sites and I was stupid enough to bite... :o

The original Star Wars kid is king of funny, though... :D

This got so much attention that it might be considered a fad:

* Gmail invitations (http://mail.google.com/) (MacRumors thread)

but I think fads should be limited to sites with a humorous angle, especially the ones that make you eager to share the site with friends as soon as you hear about them.

Some widely discussed episodes of silliness were too Mac-specific to garner CNET's attention:

* P-P-P-Powerbook (http://www.metafilter.com/mefi/33088) (MacRumors thread)

* Microsoft getting caught paying for a fake reverse Switch testimonial (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/2329519.stm) (MacRumors thread)

There is another one that I only half remember. It was a site with a name like youaremyfriend.com. If you prefixed it with any name as a subdomain, e.g., steve.youaremyfriend.com, it would put on a short display about how great Steve is, as if there was a special site dedicated just to him. That made it great to send the URL to your friend named Steve, even though it had an odd selection of words used to praise whoever it was talking about. Does anybody remember this?

http://www.mytrailerpark.com/Thanks, rdowns. I tried to find that one once but couldn't remember the URL. (They really oughta invent bookmarks, ya know, so I wouldn't have to memorize thousands of URLs.) I know there were posts about the site, since I first heard about it here, but I couldn't find a thread about it, and still can't.

Be sure to notice the page title of the main mytrailerpark page.
