I haven't found an option for how often data is pushed from iCloud to my Mac in Mountain Lion (Like in iOS). Does it exist?
Also, when I receive iMessages when the app itself isn't open, I don't receive notifications... only the badge app icon changes. It's a similar issue with Mail- I don't get notification banners for new messages unless Mail itself is open. Am I missing something?
