Desktop items disappeared.

It's the strangest thing...suddenly my screen no longer shows the apple in the top left corner (or anywhere else) and I can not click on the Launchpad rocket nor the Mission Control icon. I am using a mid 2007 iMac that has been upgraded with the latest OS. What am I doing wrong? Probably something in settings, but I don't have a clue. Help please.
 
Tried a restart?

You might have accidently shut down the processes responsible for those functions in the activity monitor? A restart should solve that if that's the case.
