There is a set of about 30 wallpapers from Mountain Lion DP4 floating around the Apple blogs. They're actually 3200x2000.

You can use an advanced image search. There is a place to specify the dimensions in pixels of an image on the left sidebar.

hope that helps.

Hey guys, I FINALLY got my rMBP today and I was wondering if anyone knows of any sites that offer free downloads of retina quality wallpapers.

OK, now where can we find real Retina wallpapers? Most of those look to be lower resolution upscaled photos.

I disagree. Maybe we have differing standards but I do have a handful of wallpapers that actually do the new display justice. When I get home later I'll put some links up.

Edit:
I took another look and realized Safari upsizes the image which is why it looks a bit blurry at "full scale" in Safari. So, the images on Interfacelift look great when set as desktop.

Here are 6 wallpapers. Be sure to download full resolution. I don't know who made these...sorry for not giving credit. I did do some editing to fit the 2880x1800 resolution. Anyway, the photos at Interfacelift were actually better than I thought. I had missed that Safari upscales images.

Doesn't it also depend upon which resolution you're usually working in? I use some photos I've taken as background images and you have to save a 3840x2400 image if you want it to look perfect at 1920x1200.

Make friends with a professional photographer! :D Have them export you their best travel and abstract shots @ 2880px. Have them throw in a small, unobtrusive watermark for the trouble.

I may provide a couple of mine to the board when I get home tonight.

I am a professional photographer and thought I could give back to this community that kept me sane through the whole MBPr ordering process and has given me such a great outlet for general discussion.

I am providing gorgeous high-resolution perfectly-sized 2880x1800 images for you to use as your desktop background. It goes without saying they are for personal, non-commercial use. If you'd like to purchase them (in any print or digital format), you can contact me. And of course, you are invited to follow me on any of the services in my signature.

If they are well-received, I will continue to add more sets.

I didn't want to create a new thread for this, but here's some of my wallpapers that I've recently updated to 2880x1800 resolution:

(All links to deviantart)
'Home for a Hermit': http://fav.me/d59k7ps
'Improbable Water': http://fav.me/d3548xv
'Boardwalk Wheel': http://fav.me/d59gfot
'Freedoms and Empires': http://fav.me/d4mrnr3

I've only attached thumbnails 'cos I imagine DA would get pretty irritated at leeching 2880x1800 images.... ;)

you're talking about the different scaled resolution names. it is always showing 2880x1800. in the case of desktop wallpaper, the RMBP displays the wallpaper at the correct native 2880 size.

The "Looks like 1440x900" mode runs at 2880x1800. If you set a 2880x1800 wallpaper you will see every single bit of detail in that wallpaper.

The "Looks like 1920x1200" mode runs at 3840x2400, and is then scaled down to 2880x1800.

Lots of people have been confused by this, I think Anandtech's review explains it the best.

I mean that the 2880x1800 wallpaper gets displayed at full resolution, every pixel. You can't see every pixel of a 2880x1800 wallpaper on your 1920x1200 display ;)

Also web browsers are not a reliable way to report resolution. I think that Web Browsers will report a resolution of 1440x900 and a CSS pixel ratio of 2.0. That way websites don't render as tiny on screen, instead they render as large as they would on a non-retina display. The web browser then does the job of rendering text, css, and images (if the site provides them) at retina detail.

I think that the same applies in Windows when you have DPI scaling enabled with a supporting web browser.

True, but you were implying that a 2880x1800 wasn't the resolution that you should use for wallpapers on the RMBP because it didn't really run at 2880x1800. That isn't true.

There have been quite a few threads for retina-sized wallpapers, but I thought we could collect a few of the best ones that really take advantage of the retina display's pixel density.

I've been a big fan of interfacelift for the past few years and saw this particular wallpaper the other day that I thought was absolutely gorgeous. The retina display really does it justice since the details pop out.

Please do share any others you all think really utilize the retina display!

That's some picture.

I recommend getting all the pics from Interfacelift. I did the bulk download service for around $2 and got 200+ pictures at the 2880x1800 resolution. I have them rotating as my desktop background. Highly recommended (though the one you link to was newer than my bulk download, so thanks for that. It's one of the best I've seen).

Here are some photos I took with my Nikon D700, shrink down to 3200 x 2200. Retina ready!

I've got more on my Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/steveduxh)
