Hey all,

A friend of mine has a 2007 Macbook Pro with a fresh install of Lion on it, updated to the latest version. However, after he performed the clean install, the About This Mac dialog box did not report a serial number, and just gave the message, "Serial Number #". In an attempt to fix it, he deleted the AboutThisMac.string file located in /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj.

Naturally, the About This Mac dialog box no longer appears, and it was at this point he brought it to me. I've never encountered this problem, and I'm unsure of how to proceed.

I followed all the usual Mac troubleshooting steps, including repairing permissions, running in Safe Mode, and checking the disc for errors. Sadly, the dialog box and the strings file remain missing.

Is there any way that I can get the strings file to replace itself via a system command? Or do I have to completely reinstall Lion to fix the problem?

Does anyone have an idea of how I can go about recreating this file? I can always fill in the required fields with the necessary info, but I am unsure of what the original format of the file is.

Any help would be appreciated!

Take the computer to an Apple Store and ask them to serialize the computer. As for the About This Mac dialog problem... Sorry I don't know how to fix that.

...That file could be copied from another Mac that is running the same version of OS X. Remember ot match ownership and permissions when you copy it. Or you could try applying the latest combo update for OS X and see if that fixes the missing file issue.

That file is not where the information about the individual computer is located anyway.

If the computer isn't showing a serial number, as Simplicated said, Apple will need to fix that.

Thank you both for your prompt and helpful replies! Dang, I guess taking it to the Apple Store is the only solution to get the serial number back. The good news is I talked to my friend about his Mac, and he explained that an Authorized Apple Repair Center had replaced his mobo at some point due to a failing GPU heat sensor, so it's possible that they forgot to serialize it after it was fixed, although maybe only Apple can do that anyway.

I tried copying over the file from another Lion Mac, Bear, and even after a reboot About This Mac wouldn't appear. I even used Pacifist to extract the original .strings file from the Lion Installer.app, and copied that back into his directory, but no luck. I didn't try downloading the Combo Update, as he had already done that when Lion was first installed on his computer. It's possible that may work, but I think Apple should be able to fix the dialog box when he takes the Mac in to get it serialized.

Thanks again for
