Alongside other OS X Mountain Lion announcements at its Worldwide Developers Conference last month, Apple announced an Up-to-Date program (http://www.apple.com/osx/uptodate/) allowing any customer purchasing a Mac on or after June 11 to receive a free upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion once the operating system is released to the public. With OS X Mountain Lion being released only via the Mac App Store, the free upgrade is being delivered a redemption code for the store.

http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2012/07/mountain_lion_up_to_date_form_1.jpg

While the company has yet to officially announce it and almost certainly will not do so until OS X Mountain Lion itself actually launches, the company's Up-to-Date online application form is already live (https://uptodate.apple.com/UtdPrepareAction.action). Users are required to enter their date and location of purchase for the qualifying Mac, fill out personal contact information, and enter the serial numbers of machines eligible for the free upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion. Once all information has been submitted, Apple generates a reference number for the claim and the actual redemption code is delivered via email.

http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2012/07/mountain_lion_up_to_date_form_2.jpg

In our testing, the redemption code arrived as a password-protected PDF attachment within seconds of submitting the online form, with a second email containing a password for opening the PDF arriving at the same time.Dear Apple Customer,

Thank you for participating in the OS X Mountain Lion Up-To-Date program. The content code that allows you to download and install OS X Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store is in the file attached below. You will receive the password to unlock the attached files in a separate email. Your content code may be redeemed immediately through the Mac App Store and will not expire.

Please follow these steps to redeem your copy of OS X Mountain Lion:

1. Open the Mac App Store application.

2. Select "Redeem" in the Quick Links section of the Mac App Store.

3. Enter your content code.

If you have questions regarding the redemption or installation of your software from the Mac App Store, visit www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/.

To redeem your content code you need the latest version of the Mac App Store application, an Apple ID, and Internet access (fees may apply). You can create an Apple ID at appleid.apple.com/us.

As a reminder, content codes may not be resold and can only be redeemed by people above the minimum age specified by the terms and conditions of the Mac App Store in your country. Apple is not responsible for lost or stolen content codes. You may review the Terms of Service for the Mac App Store at www.apple.com/legal/itunes/ww/.

Thank you for choosing Apple!http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2012/07/mountain_lion_up_to_date_form_3.jpg

Attempting to redeem the OS X Mountain Lion code in the Mac App Store does not yet provide access to the update, however, as it has yet to go live in the store. Entering the code simply yields an error noting that it is "not recognized as a valid code".

OS X Mountain Lion will be released later this month, with hints suggesting that it could arrive this Wednesday, July 25 (http://www.macrumors.com/2012/07/15/apple-to-launch-os-x-mountain-lion-on-july-25th/).

(Thanks, Justin!)

Update 10:12 AM: Apple appears to have taken the Up-to-Date application offline.

This is sensible, it will spread the server load, which as usual will be insane. I have 3 Macs to do and will choose the early hours after the first rush is over before downloading.

They haven't announced the Up to Date is live. So most customers won't be looking yet. I think they may release Tuesday, announce and go live in one fell swoop, just to throw us off since everyone expects it Wednesday.

Edit: however after checking roaring apps yesterday, it seems many app have yet to be tested or verified as working on ML with some even marked as not working. I found this surprising as just like Leopard -> Snow Leopard, Lion -> Mountain Lion isn't such a huge upgrade that it should break compatability. But as such I may install on my new Air but leave the main iMac running 10.7 until I know I don't have any software issues.

If you read the page, you'd clearly see:

IMO I wouldn't take that to mean anything. Many developers don't update their apps until the OS gets released publicly - no rush to do it before hand is my guess. I don't take much stock in Roaring Apps - there are a ton of apps that haven't been tested yet and that was the case in Lion.

Does anyone know if this binds a copy of Mountain Lion to your account, or is it only good for a one time download?

Scenario:
I have a 2012 MBA that qualifies. I also have an older MBP. When I redeem on my MBA will I later be able to download and install it on my MBP? Does it bind the copy to your user account, or is it a special one-time download?

Did anyone run into this last time around with the Lion Up-to-Date program?

I wouldn't call Roaring Apps the "source", however, for Lion a lot of apps were updated on there prior to the release. So I was surprised that devs and those running seeds had not tested and confirmed compatability of more apps.

ATTENTION THOSE WHO ARE ASKED TO SUBMIT PROOF OF PURCHASE

I entered the serial number on the box of my macbook pro and was asked to submit proof of purchase. When I looked at my receipt from Apple I noticed there are two serial numbers listed in the receipt for the same product, the one I already entered and a second one. I tried the other serial number and the claim went through without having to submit proof of purchase. BUT I have not yet received the email, so it's possible it will let you submit the form without proof of purchase using the other serial number, but it may not be a valid request. I'm debating submitting another claim using the serial number on the box and just attaching proof of purchase as they requested.

EDIT: I realized I have two serial numbers because the first Macbook Pro they gave me had a defect on the keyboard, so they brought out another one to replace it. What's strange is that the ask for proof of purchase for the serial number for the MBP I went home with, but using the serial number for the defective unit I was able to submit a request without proof, but I have not received an email with a code yet. I assume that claim will be denied so I'm submitting a new claim with my actual serial number and I'll just submit proof of purchase.

Funny I have the OS X Mountain Lion Up-to-Date Program form up but clicking the continue button does nothing. I opened it before 12noon and didn't complete it and came back 15 minutes later to non-responsive. :( Opening new tab or different browser gives a 404 error like others are getting. Seems like they were just testing it and will put it up live on Wednesday. As long as the codes come quickly, I'm fine with that.

So do we in the UK and it works for us - what's the format of CDN postcodes? Ours are AB1 2CD

Canadian is A1B 2C3
Like yours only our letters/numbers alternate. It still accepted and was able to put in serial, it but at the last page it didn't show Canada, it put United States. Guess us other countries must wait.

I bought my macbook in UK but my iTunes ID is US. Is there a way to redeem that lion voucher in different store?

If the Apple ID is US i.e. US credit card is attached to the iTunes account then you use the US App Store, no matter what country you are located in or bought your Mac in.

Unless gm 2 is released what you downloaded is the final. You will be able to update to 10.8.1

Yes. Using the form when it comes back up will get you a redemption code. I'm assuming you use the same App Store account for both computers, of course. If you do, it'll update both no problem.

It should be handled just like any other purchase on the Mac Appstore. The software (in this case, OS X Mountain Lion) will be registered as one of your purchases. So, until Apple decides to kill the Mac Appstore, you should be able to download it to your heart's content on as many Macs as you own, tied to your AppleID. No?

If it can be bundled to the Apple ID, then the funny thing is that it's better than getting a Mac with pre-loaded ML. Afaik, the pre-loaded OS X belongs to the machine which you bought, you're not able to link it somehow to your Apple ID (like you can with iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand). So if you want to install ML on your other Macs, theoretically you cannot do it with your pre-loaded version of OS X. There's a tricky way to get your hands on the installer dmg file in recovery mode, but I guess it's not completely legal in Apple's interpretation.

Look, what I know is that I've bought an Air last year with pre-loaded Lion, and there is no way I can download it from the App Store again for free. It's simply not bound to my Apple ID, while the iLife programs indeed are. The only way to download Lion installer again is boot into recovery mode, but the installer file is hidden, and normally you couldn't carry it to another Mac. There is a way to abort the install process, catch the downloaded dmg installer and copy it onto a USB drive for example. But you know, it's only possible with some hackin' around, and it is definitely not bound to my Apple ID.

They can't just give it to everyone for free, you know? They need a way to know that you bought your mac on or after June 11th. So by sending in this request they can verify through serial number that your mac was one that was purchased on or after June 11th. Its just their way of making sure the right people are getting the software for free.

I wondered about that too. I just assume that MAS can't check the serial no. of the machine doing the download so you need a redemption code to prove eligibility.

Thats because yours is PRE INSTALLED. The up to date program is for people who bought macs a month before the new OS came out. What you do is Register the mac to the up to date program and they give you a Redeem code for Mountain Lion which is than registered to...your apple id.

Hey dude, I'm perfectly aware of that. :D That's exactly what I pointed out in my previous post... that it's kinda funny that with this free update program you get an "unlimited" App Store version of OS X, but if you buy a Mac just a few weeks later, you get only the pre-installed version, which is limited to just one Mac.

How does one re-install on a pre-installed machine then? When you install from the recovery partition it asks for your apple ID and downloads the operating system, so it must be tied to your account in some sense.

Wow, some people just need to grumble, don't they? You don't need to apply, you need to request. There's a difference. You were promised a free upgrade and you will get it once it's live. Then you request your copy and it will be yours. Why isn't it automatic? Because maybe not everyone wants the upgrade. If it was automatic you can imagine the backlash of people who prefer to wait for x.2 releases or not upgrade at all. This way you just need to fill out a form, get a code and it's all yours.

I'm jumping in on this update. I have snow leopard now, but unfortunately I've noticed a few apps I've been wanting to download from the App store don't work on it, only Lion....not to mention the latest Aperture update. So although I'm perfectly happy with S.L., I'm going to update. I'm a little excited by some of the new features but only as long as my system stays as stable as it is now. I just love my MBP and don't want it ***** up with incompatibilities and bugs.

I am hoping that all 2012 (and older. :) ) get a update that when they do a internet restore, that it downloads ML. That would really tick me off if I had to install Lion first then ML. :/

As did I, and they still asked for proof! If it doesn't work by the time ML is released, I'm going to give apple a call.

Did you purchase directly from Apple? If you didn't then it won't work with a copy of some kind of receipt. Because their system is likely showing the date of channel sale which was before June 11th and thus doesn't qualify for the offer. But they know it was a channel sale so they need to see the receipt to verify the sale to use was after the 11th and then they will adjust appropriately

Because the software comes from the Mac App Store and the email on your receipt or even product registration might not be the one you use in the store.

So rather than make a potentially bad assumption, they send you a code and you redeem it with the ID you wish to use.

----------

Since I was in a mall this a.m., I stopped by the Apple Retail Store and copied down the serial numbers of three of their retina display MBPs on display. We'll see if those serials have been blocked or if they yield a Mountain Lion upgrade when the time comes.

Doesn't matter. You have to have proof of purchase. You won't have a valid receipt number and date of sale so no go on that lame attempt to steal

----------

Ah... gotcha. Maybe they will drop Lion to $19.99 after ML comes out.

They are more likely to just drop Lion. All new machines will come with ML and you had a good year to update. Plus a good 4-6 weeks to verify if you could get ML and buy Lion even if you aren't ready to install just yet.

If you didn't keep up they might have that flash drive still around for the $69 it costs. But then again, they might not

I purchased it from Apple.com on the 18th of June.

Then it's probably the receipt numbering system. Online and the physical ones don't use the same one and the verification system might have only had the physical store system on.or it could be a conflict with the existence of two dates - ordered and shipped. So they need to see the actual order number etc.

I think the word you were looking for was Anxious rather than Excited.

I'm looking forward to the stronger iOS integration. Especially with Notes and Notifications.

As for other programs not working with ML.. there's a pretty thorough list somewhere here on MR that lists the apps that people with Dev accounts have tested and reported as working or not working. If an app you use is listed as not working.. don't upgrade.

Those that upgrade blindly with apps that they depend on daily are upgrading at that their own risk if they choose not to do the due diligence first.

Yes. The online code you receive from the "up-to-date program" is essentially a voucher for a free Mountain Lion in the App Store. Once you redeem the code, it's as if you purchased Mountain Lion, and is available for download/install on any computer using that particular Apple ID.

Well so much for getting ahead of the game. Just called Apple and they said all of the codes they sent out early are bad and we should be getting new emails in a couple days with new codes.

Seems like all the codes they give out doesn't work including the new ones.

I just applied for a code a few hours ago and just had the redeem code via email a few minutes ago. I also have the code used error.

When I enter my code in the App Store, it tells me that the code "has already been used". What the heck!?

UPDATE: ok, I see a lot of people are having this problem. It's annoying that they're not going to fix it until "a couple of days". Oh well.

Bad code here too. If apple are struggling with the amount of downloads I am sure they will be wanting to take care of new "paying" customers before they address our issues. May have to wait a little on this one.

How long did you guys have to wait to receive any emails?

I have filled the form and got a reference code, but so far no emails; that was about an hour and a half ago.

I should probs wait longer, just want to know how long people have had to wait

I filled out the application when MR first reported on this and they said they would email me, but it's been like 2 days and I haven't gotten an email from them. I have my claim number. Is there anyway to check the status of my claim?

I filled it out 30 minutes ago, no email or code received yet.

I purchased through amazon. It was odd that there were maybe 30 different amazon.com options to choose for the retailer.

Same here, still not received the e-mails (although reading elsewhere the code they would contain would probably be invalid  )

I've just tried filling out the form again and it says that this serial number (of my MBP) is already claimed

Looks like Apple have really screwed this up

Finally an explanation as to what happened: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57479574-263/apple-up-to-date-redemption-codes-not-working/

That doesn't explain much. It also doesn't explain why people who actually waited until the program was live to submit - have not received anything yet.

I applied for my free upgrade probably at least 3 hours ago and have not received an email with App Store code.

I called Apple Care this morning, as I was told the upgrade to OSX Mountain Lion would fix my continuous graphics issues; I used my same case number I've had with Apple for the last fortnight.

I mentioned to the guy that he can see on my case file the problems, and that I was promised that the upgrade will fix all my woes, and that this is hampering my business, as this is my sole business machine.

I gave him my claim reference; seems its been accepted. I was given the same answer, to wait 48-72 hours. I told the guy I've been waiting 48 hours already, so confirmed I'd only need to wait until tomorrow afternoon at the latest, he seemed assured I would receive my code by email by then. I asked him if it didn't come whether he should be aware I will be calling back; he positively suggested I should definitely do that if I haven't received anything by then.

So I feel somewhat positive about the experience so far, lets see how I feel about it tomorrow afternoon when I haven't received anything! :D

** EDIT **

Got my redeem code last night at 9:21pm.... I didn't know until this morning because I was watching the Olympics opening ceremony!

Seems to have worked, I now have to wait for it to download... I hope everyone else waiting has also received their codes :)
