I made an account just to post this... lol. Anyway, I was able to get a custom dock image working on my 10.8 Mountain Lion GM build.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8165/7631471138_5219dbae99_b.jpg

So basically what you do, is download dockdesigner here:

http://www.moritzwette.com/dockdesigner/dockdesigner.zip?forcedownload

Open up dockdesigner and click the 3D tab, then click the "NO" button under transparent dock. After that you can copy and paste in your custom dock images; the ones that I highlighted.

I wouldn't like that dock - but everyone has their own taste :)

The new ML dock is probably the one thing I am most excited for - I'm gonna keep it as it is! :P

I think he was just showing it as an example, proving that it works with ML.

Either that or he's trying to promote his app. Probably both.

dockdesigner isn't mine, and not trying to promote anything, just trying to help people out that were looking for a method to theme their dock. I spent at least 4 hours looking for a way to customize it, and after I figured out atleast a proof of concept I wanted to share with everyone

Guys, it's a proof of concept, not a fashion show! :p

I personally don't like to customize my dock outside of arranging icons by shape, but hey! At least we know it's possible!

I've always modded my dock to a black surface to see the open indicator "orbs" better, I don't understand why Apple uses a silver dock with light color indicators.

Normally I replace the four scurve*.png's and frontline, but [obviously] that is no longer possible. I tried your app and method, the only aspect which changed are the indicators as I couldn't get the dock itself to mod.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

PS I wrote Panic re: CandyBar for 10.8 support, their reply wasn't very encouraging.

Same here - I am so looking forward to a custom dock in ML - specifically black. Thanks for the hard work - for now I'm using your app to enable the 2D dock (is this an OSX preference that I can't find?)

Can't get the background to change - is there a certain size the image must be?

Has the dock changed by default anyway? It looks more solid/grey.

Yeah the ML dock did change from Lion. I do like it better aesthetically but still for me a dark dock is so much nicer.

G'Day mate,
I came across your post here and would like to achieve something similar. I am on ML and tried the app you mentioned however it just kept popping up the same. I even copied the files and restarted to get the same effect. Any chance you could shed some light onto this or point me in another direction.

I cannot get any of the previously mentioned steps to work. The closest thing I got to working was by following instructions on Leopard Docks and 'killall Dock". The downloaded dock partly showed (only the indicator lights) there was not any change to the "SILVER BAR" Can anyone please help..

If anyone can get a black style ML Dock, be glossy/matte (prefer matte :D), with white lights, that would be great!

Just wanted to let everyone know, using the DP3 dock works. However, it caused issues/glitches for me. I put the old dock back and repaired permissions, I'm going to try putting the customized one in again and repairing permissions.

I'm wondering if there's some sort of cache that causes ML to automatically change the scurve files back... It can't just be getting them from nowhere.

Just for those who are wanting to change their OSX Lion Dock to ML,

1. Download these files here (http://leoparddocks.com/sites/default/files/Mountain%20Lion.zip)

2. Go to Macintosh HD > /System/Library/Core Services/

3. Scroll down to Dock and copy this to the desktop as a backup

4. Then right click this and "Show Package Contents"

5. Go to /Contents/Resources/

6. Drag the downloaded files in here and "Replace" them

7. Open Terminal and type: killall Dock

8. Enjoy!

P.S. To revert back, copy back the files from the one on the desktop-"Show Package Contents", go to /Contents/Resources/ find the files... etc.

If you forgot to back up, you're stuffed... Nah jokes :P Download the whole file here (http://cl.ly/1f393B3m421F/download/Dock.app.zip)

Thanks to http://leoparddocks.com/ for the dock (find more docks here)
Also thanks to jji7skyline (http://hackamac.tk/) for the dock :P

Ok... in step 4, you are not working in your copied out file, you are working in the actual file in /System/Library/Core Services/

Did you actually get this to work. This was the first thing most of us tried and it would not get rid of the Silver Bar in ML . I personally got the indicators to change and that was it. If you did get it to work, can you show us you dock image please.

Did you experience any issues with Exposť and Mission Control? Last time I modded the new dock it negated the ability to uncheck "Group all windows by application". I couldn't care less about reflections, as long as I can get a black layer on I'm golden :).

Thanks!

Ditto on the indicators, I was able to change them to the glowing orbs, which made a difference in itself. However, nada on the dock.

I tried using this, but it didn't work correctly. To put my dock back to the way it was, i clicked restore 3d defaults, and it messed up the indicator lights... Is there a way to fix this? Or does anyone have an image that I can use to make it look normal?

Looks horrible.

No offense. I respect what you choose to like or hate. But I think he was trying to show us how to change dock picture. He didn't say or necessarily mean that he likes the look of that particular dock, which you think is horrible. And it is not polite to say other's work "look horrible", while he made his contribution, but you did none.

There are many users who love to customize their system. But since the changes took place in ML and candybar discontinued, many's ability to customize was greatly limited. It is wonderful to know that customizing dock is feasible and easy again.

I was able to get the look I was going for on Mountain Lion, but it required patching the Dock binary. I'd be willing to share how I was able to do it for those who absolutely just have to have a different color dock (like me).

So I fiddled and tinkered, and finally managed to get a completely clear dock (as below) on my iMac (ML 10.8.2). I tried the "Black Dock" terminal mod posted here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1495519&page=4 and got nothing. I tried Dock designer, got nothing. I tried Mirage, and suddenly, dock is gone! Sweet! I used Candy bar to plunk in some better indicator graphics (it's using the "simple" indicators, the ones used by the 2D, side-mounted dock, but I"m OK with that.)

http://maclogic.com/images/mldock-imac.png

So, I ran Mirage on my MacBook Pro, then used CB to swap indicators. (Same OS, ML 10.8.2). However, no matter what I do, even repeating all the unsuccessful previous attempts I ran through on the iMac, I get the 2D dock with the border (as below)! I cannot get that sucker to go away on the MBPro, nor can I get it to appear on the iMac.

http://maclogic.com/images/mldock-mbpro.png

Now I'm completely stumped. Any ideas?

(I apologize for the huge images - I haven't figured out how to scale them. Sorry!)

Want to customize the background of your 3D dock in OS X Mountain Lion? Now it's possible, see for yourself

I used a nice little app called DockMod by spyresoft, it's only 8 bucks and it works like a charm!

Very nice @1920ís! When I entered this thread and saw some of the pictures I just thought ďOh my godÖĒ but yours is perfect! Everything fits very nicely, very nice vibe and great background picture too :)

Did you do the icons yourself?

Apart from this, I donít think Iíd change my Doc ó I like it the way it is :D The only thing I disliked at some point was this little dot/arrow that shows you which app is open (it used to be black, now itís white and shining). At first it was hard to see but now itís fine, maybe I got used to it or perhaps something was changedÖ :)

Oh and another thing that someone could eventually try would be to have the design of the dock when itís at the left or at the right to appear when the dock is in the centre. Not sure if you guys see what I mean, but when set to the sides it has a different design, I like this one as well :)
