In Apple's earnings press release (http://www.macrumors.com/2012/07/24/apple-reports-results-for-q3-2012-8-8-billion-profit-on-35-billion-in-revenue/) issued just moments ago, Apple CEO Tim Cook officially announced that OS X Mountain Lion will indeed be launching tomorrow, July 25."We're thrilled with record sales of 17 million iPads in the June quarter," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. "We've also just updated the entire MacBook line, will release Mountain Lion tomorrow and will be launching iOS 6 this Fall. We are also really looking forward to the amazing new products we've got in the pipeline."OS X Mountain Lion will be priced at $19.99 and will be available via the Mac App Store.

Apple followed a similar tactic last year, announcing at the start of its July earnings conference call (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/07/19/lion-launches-tomorrow-on-mac-app-store/) that OS X Lion would launch the following day.

So far no changes, granted we're talking only minutes after announcement on phone call.

Is that for the update from Lion or the whole thing? My father-in-law did not upgrade last time but thinks about this time. He has an iMac which would run it and MyFi 3G - so I have to plan moving it into town to suckle it from my 50MBit/sec cable - that will reduce package loss and a lot of headache and time.

20$ from SL or Lion. You don't need to go from SL to Lion first to get ML.

Thanks. I think he has SL. I'll check that first (dunno how right now since I'm PC user, but I find my way through...)

PS: I would love to run Mac's OS but they don't support my hardware: 6 core AMD are not Hackintosh compatible. Neither is the Radeon HD 6790. What a shame. Well, I guess Windows 8 isn't too bad either...

What does your machine type and being ready or not ready for it have to do with anything? Unless you have a 2008 core 2 duo white macbook, I think all of us are ready for it.
You know who's not ready for it? App devs who will have to plow through the massive amounts of error logs that their paying customers will be generating.

I created a Lion USB and did a clean install via my USB. (Download Lion, go into disk utilities, tinker around, etc).

Will it be the same with Mountain Lion? Can I download, create a Mountain Lion USB... and then do a clean install via that USB?

I'd like to do a 100% clean install on my SSD, etc.

Every OS upgrade allows you to install the OS over your existing installation and keep your user files and settings intact. I've upgraded my current Mac through every OS from 10.4 to 10.7 and never wiped the disk.

But, even if the disk got wiped, it won't matter, because you've got a backup of your files, right....? You're running Time Machine every hour onto an external drive, right...? ;)

If you haven't already set up Time Machine either with an external USB drive or a Time Capsule. The money you spend for either solution will be far less than what you would have to pay to recover your data should the worst happen, and there is no guarantee that you'd be able to get any data back. Alternatively I like to use Carbon Copy Cloner, which makes a bootable clone. Having no backup is a very bad idea, and doing something major like an OS upgrade with no backup is a very VERY bad idea. The update will keep all your data intact IF IT WORKS RIGHT, but THINGS GO WRONG.

I'm pumped!

If Mountain Lion is to Lion as Snow Leopard was to Leopard, I'll be very very pleased!

It wasn't about new features for me; although they are welcome :) It's all about the under-the-hood tweaking that they did. SL ran sooo much smoother than Leopard...

I'm waiting until at least a week after 8.1 is released. In the mean time, Lion works just fine.

I'd be happy with 1/2 of that $19.99 going towards security steps to safeguard Macs from further malware/virus breaches. But, we know that security from viruses and malware is not the major upgrade here.

Apple should be well-equipped enough (manpower, brainpower and $$$) to provide us full anti-virus protection without users sensing a need to download 3rd party software. Granted, attacks are few and Apple provides a certain level of security already. But, increasingly Mac users are going to 3rd party companies for anti-viral protection due to the concerns from this past year.

On a user level, I miss the days when Mac users were fewer... and concerns over security were nearly a 100% Windows user concern. I think we all know that as the user base grows... the malware/viral attacks will increase.

Seems bad but isn't. Afaik you gotta register your copy during installation to your iTunes account anyways. The torrent would only help being a relief for the Apple servers since some people might get the OS through torrent. That should not interfere with your end user license.

I'm torn… it should improve some of what I hate in Lion, so that's good, but it's likely the end of all but the most-critical updates for Snow Leopard, which I'm not so happy about.

Yea, the PowerPC-based Mac mini I bought my grandparents years ago is still running Leopard. Apple stopped updating Leopard long ago, which is worrisome in terms of security. But the damn thing just keeps trucking.

Maybe. If someone checks on that, try to download apps on the app store then. That is probably where it would catch you if you were able to skip. I mean, when I bought Windows 7 Ultimate, I didn't care about the DVD. I can download Windows from Microsoft for free. Installing, I need the key though and I have a certain time allowed to activate it. If Apple doesn't do that, they basically invite you to "steal" it.

I can imagine a LOT of angry Apple enthusiasts if they can't download when others around the world can. It's bad enough that users in some countries wait months for hardware. Flipping the switch everywhere all at once seems good to me (especially since I just learned that the download is likely to come from local servers that Apple pays to use, not their own central servers).

Honestly, it's better to install it as an upgrade because then you have the option of using Lion, if you had any reason to. Macs can only run the OS they came with and newer, not older.

Ok, it's already "tomorrow" in this part of the world; Where is my Mountain Lion?

Apple cares nothing about anyone outside of the US and more specifically, Cupertino.

Can't wait to get this. Mountain Lion will blow away Windows 8.

Lol. Too funny

I think the last beta download was about 4GB.

Thanks to all for the info. I guess I'll have to be very patient with the download ;)

Why $19.99 and not $20.00? What's the catch?

Yes, but why $19.99 and not $20.00? what's the difference? Is it that $19.99 just looks cheaper?

Is this a serious question? Even most kids can figure out this is how marketing works.

Hope they work on iLife next.

F iLife. They need to work on iWork now first and foremost.

Will 4 GB RAM be enough for ML? Assuming refreshed Mac minis come with that as a minimum. Will just do web browsing and running Handbrake.

Why does everyone want to download ML as soon as it's available. Hasn't anyone learned that the servers are going to bog down or crash and people will discover untold numbers of bugs the first few weeks?

I'm waiting until at least a week after 8.1 is released. In the mean time, Lion works just fine.

Good for you. :)

Doesn't everything sold in the US App Store (that's not free) end in $.99?

Just wondering, should I back my laptop up or will I not need to worry about it?
If the upgrade doesn't crash on your laptop, you won't need a backup.

I was going to go buy an MBP tonight. Can anyone tell me whether or not it is better to buy one tomorrow rather than today? Would ones they receive tomorrow have the new OS, and if so, is it better in any way to have the new OS from the beginning as opposed to installing it as an upgrade?

It's likely not pre-installed on that MacBook Pro but that doesn't matter. My MacBook Pro that I bought even months after release of Lion came with Snow Leopard 10.6.6. I received a free copy of Lion anyways. So if you want to buy a MacBook Pro, just go ahead since you'll be eligible to receive your free Mountain Lion copy frome here: http://www.apple.com/at/osx/uptodate/ (You may change the country to yours). AND: You'll have a license of Lion, too for your other Macs (if any) from the Mac App Store :-) (You need to register your MacBook Pro with preinstalled Lion to receive free downloads of Lion from Mac App Store)

Can someone tell me how many gigabytes (approx.) mountain lion will be? I have such a lame and slow Internet connection, it's gonna take ages to download :-(

The Golden Master Seed of Mountain Lion was about 4GB. It's already running on my work-Mac in the office :-D
Can't wait for it to install it on my MacBook Pro.

--

A co-worker installed the GM on his own Mac at home and asked me if it's possible, if he registers it with his own iTunes Account, to get updates from Mac App Store after the Retail one drops. Since I've got no idea and I was wondering, too, I just wanted to ask you folks if it's possible. Is it?

Bah humbug, the geek in me is excited and I will enjoy it no matter. ;)

Not really. Windows 7 and Lion are pretty comparable. I see ML as an incremental improvement. Windows 8 is a bigger leap....

been running both for awhile and windows 8 is nice but not sure is blow ML away.

AndersBrohus,
There is a temp solution for that. Right click on any iWork app and Click on "Get Info", un-check "open in Low Resolution". this should trick the iWork, thus tables would not work the proper way.

Try it.

Does anyone know if the Message app will allow you send iMessages with just a phone number? It would be great if it could, because having to give my friends my email address to be able to use it is not ideal.

I know you're joking, which is why I'll jokingly ask: "Sooo, how is it being a virgin at your age?"

Since I'm under the age of consent, I'll say being a virgin is better than being in young offenders ;)

10.7.1 came out Aug 16 last year. 10.7.0 was released July 20. So more like four weeks?

Yup no time at all to wait for a stable version.

NO, Messages would only work with your AppleID which is an email. Then you can add a phone number.

Correct, it has to be done this way, so people on other devices (iPad, iPod touch, computers) can use iMessage.
