In line with yesterday's brief announcement (http://www.macrumors.com/2012/07/24/os-x-mountain-lion-launching-tomorrow-july-25/) that OS X Mountain Lion would debut today, Apple has officially launched (http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2012/07/25Mountain-Lion-Available-Today-From-the-Mac-App-Store.html) its next-generation Mac operating system to the public. OS X Mountain Lion (http://appshopper.com/mac/productivity/os-x-mountain-lion) [Mac App Store (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/os-x-mountain-lion/id537386512?mt=12)] is priced at $19.99 and is available exclusively through the Mac App Store.

http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2012/07/os_x_mountain_lion_macs.jpg

OS X Mountain Lion brings a number of new features and enhancements to the Mac, including improved iCloud integration with support for Notes and Reminders, iMessage support via the new Messages application, Notification Center, Power Nap updating during sleep, Dictation, enhanced sharing tools, Game Center, improved security with Gatekeeper, and more."People are going to love the new features in Mountain Lion and how easy it is to download and install from the Mac App Store," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "With iCloud integration, Mountain Lion is even easier to set up, and your important information stays up to date across all your devices so you can keep editing documents, taking notes, creating reminders, and continue conversations whether you started on a Mac, iPhone or iPad."For users looking to deploy server capabilities, Apple will also be releasing OS X Mountain Lion Server as a $19.99 add-on via the Mac App Store.

Update: Many users are reporting difficulties purchasing and downloading OS X Mountain Lion, undoubtedly due to heavy load on Apple's servers.

Update 2: OS X Server is now available (http://www.macrumors.com/2012/07/25/apple-launches-os-x-server-app-for-19-99/).

My MBP is too old for Mountain Lion and I've held off on going to Lion since Snow Leopard has been just fine for me. Now that iCloud is becoming more mature, I've been considering upgrading to Lion. Same here, not a good start

I think you meant to say "Not a surprise". It's the same each time. Apple do it on purpose to over-egg the demand. They do the same when they release the iPhone - throttle the supply and you have queues outside shops and therefore free publicity.

I donít know, compatibility perhaps? The App Store is the only source for Lion, without it, customers who cannot upgrade to Mountain Lion anymore are stuck with an older system.

good point. maybe it'll only show up if you're not eligable for ml. would make sense, because they obviously want people to upgrade.

Update: Many users are reporting difficulties purchasing and downloading OS X Mountain Lion, undoubtedly due to heavy load on Apple's servers.

this isn't "undoubtedly" due to the heavy load, this i undoubtedly due to the piss poor infrastructure at apple's servers for handling major os releases...

The reason isn't because a lot of users are accessing their servers, this is expected in new os releases...

it's because their servers can't handle a lot of users accessing them.

I wonder if Apple would ever consider releasing the updates like this at say noon local time, wherever you are. That way they could spread out the initial hit to the servers. Of course, if you care that much about getting the latest OS in the first hour, you probably know how to fake your location, but it has to still help them out a bit!

For my 2012 MacBook Air, the free upgrade link just gives a 404 error page. Anyone else yet have success participating in the free upgrade program yet?

What a bunch of idiots not being able to get that right. ****ing freaks. And thatb is not because of server overload, that is simply some one not pushing the right buttons. As they pushed the wrong buttons yesterday by launching it too early. You wanna make 38 billion bucks profit and you don't wanna spend money on a few IT guys to get this right?

I am sorry but it irritates the hell out of me. I could have predicted this two days ago, with the off line online debacle of the update form...

I think you meant to say "Not a surprise". It's the same each time. Apple do it on purpose to over-egg the demand. They do the same when they release the iPhone - throttle the supply and you have queues outside shops and therefore free publicity.

Actually these days supply is not that bad on launchday I can walk in after school on a launch day-8 hours minimum after launch- and pickup whatever i want in 5 minutes. But wait now your going to say it's because android are taking over and no one wants iPhone anymore.

Seriously Apple can't win against you haters.

Your probably going to call me a fanboy, but really who's the real fanboy, your group of "fandroids" have posted the same rubbish for the last 5 years on these and other Apple/tech related forums regardless of fact, Apple fans are simply spending their own money on stuff they enjoy.
