Anyone know how long it takes for them to validate that you are eligible for the up to date program?

Same question here...
It's complete bullish*t that I have to wait even longer for ML. If I bought the Mac at a Apple Retail Store, the claim should be automatic.
Bet's on it will be several days before we get our download codes.

Yeah me too but I got the code in like 10 minutes but I get an error in the MAS "The code you entered is not recognised as a valid code" when I try to redeem it. I don't know if it's because I chose MacBook or some other reason.

You would think Apple could modify their validation system to automatically send the code if your serial number is for a rMBP. All of them automatically qualify.

Such a ridiculous system. Can anybody explain to me why I should have to scan a proof of purchase when bought online via their online store.

Surely they could just make it automated if bought direct from Apple. Log in using your Apple ID/Password, provide your serial number and maybe the order number and then let the servers scan for this and see if it all matches and give you the code straight away.

Stupid. Hope I can get it by today. I'm tempted to just use my £70 voucher to get it free from the App store anyway using that credit. I need to do it for my iMac, but I'm holding out hope that I can use my free MBPR upgrade program on more than one mac.

Edit: What are the 'claim numbers' we were told to record and save for a later date even for? I can't see anywhere a place to enter to try track progress or anything; I didn't even get a confirmation email, is that normal?

Yup, UK site could be different.

Edit: Or to do with the fact my serial number isn't coming up when I check the 'service and coverage' section. Sent an e-mail to Apple over this as I ordered on the 15th June with my MBPR being shipped on the 12th July. I'd hope their systems have put my S/N in the database by now.

I'd imagine that is the case considering it can't recognise the S/N. *sigh*.

Just been on the phone to support at Apple.

To cut a long story short, they don't have a clue if you've made a claim.

They just tell you to wait and when I asked why some people get theirs in 30 seconds and others might have to wait 30 hours, the man said "it's just a bit of an erratic system".

Mmm. Say that again.

Me: Yes. Apple's website: Ok, here's the code. We already are offering you a year of repair and support so here's your measly free upgrade code.
BOOM! DONE!

What I don't understand is that if the software is going to be free anyways why doesnt apple simply use the built in software update panel to update all the retina macbook pro's and all the mid 2012 macbook's with the correct model number, since they were released on or after the required date for a free code. Just saying that would be a lot simpler and easier for all of us.

Applied for mine 2 hours 10 mins ago and nothing...

A friend applied for his 10 minutes after me and got his 10 minutes later...

Pretty annoyed since my plan was to start the download and leave it running while I was out. Can't do that now... Absolutely no reason why they couldn't have started up to date applications a month ago. If I don't get it by this evening I'm going to download it and pay for it, then get them to refund it. Seems like a pretty badly mismanaged launch.

Like a lot of you guys, I submitted the form with my serial number and didn't see a "MacBook Air" option on the list, so I selected "MacBook". Apparently this causes a problem because when I received the PDF and password for said PDF file, I was given a redemption code. When entering this code in the App Store I am given the message "This code has already been used. Each code may only be used once". Talk about frustrating. Hopefully Apple will resolve this quickly. Do you need to contact customer support in order to get a new code? Anyone know?

Hey guys, as promised I'm updating what Apple said. I just got a call and they told me:

1) They're aware of the problem and are sending new codes out to anyone receiving the "Already Been Used" code error. As long as you submitted a valid serial number on their form, you should receive a new code by Email.

2) The codes could take 24-48 hours to be sent but they assured me they are doing everything in their power to have the codes sent out today. If 48 hours pass and you don't receive your new code, feel free to contact them again.

3) Choosing "Macbook" if you have a MacBook Air is perfectly OK as well as long as your serial number is correct.

That being said, I'll just spend this downtime waiting for the new code doing a complete backup with CCC and Time Machine (and recommend you guys do the same). Best of luck =) Can't wait to play with Mountain Lion!

Monday, Macrumors cited in a post that users were receiving the verification code instantly.

I ordered my rMBP through the sales team over the phone. Because that was not an option on the form I thought this could of tripped things up.

surely the worlds biggest by profit IT company can work out right we sold 2 million macs since the 11th lets assume 75% of those will want to apply for the up-to-date program instantaneously so lets get the internet running.

surely the worlds biggest by profit IT company can work out right we sold 2 million macs since the 11th lets assume 75% of those will want to apply for the up-to-date program instantaneously so lets get the internet running.

Or maybe if you brought it in the iTunes store with your apple ID just added it to your iTunes account...

Or opened the window early so that we could get the code in the run up to this date and not overloaded the server...

massive fail Apple... sort of like your earns yesterday!!!! hahaha

This is true. Like you said, the code should be automatically added to our apple IDs ESPECIALLY if we bought it with our ID on the apple.com store

They should have had the show up and running since yesterday after the call so we could get our codes. Now we're delegated to wait for hours... 50 minutes and counting. I have to say, I'm disappointed with Apple on this one.

Hey so I did a quick search throughout the forums and didn't see anything that would answer this question. I have a new Retina MacBook Pro and I filled out the form on Apple's website for the free upgrade code for Mountain Lion and I am still waiting for an email from them.

I was wondering what the average wait time was. How long did it take you to get your upgrade code?

Jul 25, 2012, 11:30 AM
Is there any technical reason why someone who pressed the button at the same time as me received it within 1 minute - and I'm sitting here 80 minutes later with nothing?

There might be a valid technical reason for that. Suppose their ML download web site has some network bandwidth limit, so it can't satisfy demand of all potential buyers\upgraders within one hour, for example. Assume, the upgrade has to be spread during a week in order not to fail.

They can't control people who buy the system for money, but they can control the issuance of redemption codes. By delaying them until the load goes down, they make the server run within specifications. Someone got lucky and got it's code quickly, yours might be waiting in one of the ongoing batches to be activated after the server load goes down slightly.

There are, probably, better ways to implement this task by reallocating extra resources that currently idle in their areas, or purchase temporary cloud resources, but it does not look like high availability of web technologies is Apple's strength. During my very limited and random usage of some of their web systems I can easily remember around three times when they were completely down for hours. Two out of three were in Steve Job's times.

P.S. I will not even try to waste my time and will give them a couple of days to deal with those who is impatient :)

You know you talk about one of the most valued companies on earth. The one having data centres the size of gaziljon footballsfields? Their server farm could probably issue 10 billion redeem codes in like 5 minutes, so I don't believe a second in that theory :)

did you ever get a confirmation email or it just randomly turned up?

I'm guessing (not an excuse but) the reason for the sudden delay was a call by somebody in management after the redeem codes where going out wrong and they had to find the bug and kill it to stop people getting the same code as somebody else...

still waiting grrrrrr

Your response is actually irrelevant to my theory. My theory is - they don't have any problems issuing codes themselves, - but rather, they are consciously delaying them.

Having gazillions of data centers and managing them efficiently - two different stories.

P.S. And I wouldn't call my post a theory - it was just a guess, that just explains things that happen.

Mmm, yes. Thanks for the response vladster - but I agree with eklof. A company that has the power to push large quantities of information for 125 million + of their users instantly (iCloud) surely could drop us a redeem code just as quickly?

If it turned up now, after 4 hours, I'd just wonder why now? What's the reason for my application being approved now and not 4 hours ago?! It's meant to be an automated system anyway! Surely that's instant?!

Hello xxxxx,
I'm sorry to hear that on redeeming the initial upgrade code you received, you were unable to proceed because an error indicated the code was invalid . I know you must be looking forward to having this resolved, xxxxx and I will be happy to assist you.

I looked into this for you and if your claim is accepted, a valid replacement code will be sent to you by email. There will be no need to submit a new claim. I apologize for any inconvenience in this regard.

Please let me know if you do not receive a replacement code within 5-7 business days, as I'll be happy to look into things further for you.

I hope this information is helpful, xxxxx, and thank you for your interest in OS X Mountain Lion. Please let me know how everything works out. I'd like to be sure that this has been resolved this for you. Take care and have a nice day!

Does anyone know if:

1. Once I get my code(s) I'll be able to install from the app store on all machines, or just the two?

2. If I have to purchase it for my non-eligible machine, will that purchase work on all (if my code doesn't come) in a reasonable time?

In short, if I have to pay $20 regardless, there's not much point in waiting for the free version.

I'm at work so if they send me my code there is NOTHING I can do at the moment but wait until I get home.......

More importantly once you actually install Lion what are you going to do that is so time sensitive?????

I wouldn't advise anyone to be foolish and impatient and purchase a copy and expect Apple to refund you because you clearly could wait.

It's only been a couple of hours and the launch was worldwide.

My real question again is for the people that are yet to receive their code did you purchase from an actual Apple store/Online/Online reseller????

I'm still waiting for my code and purchased it from MacMall.com

Lol so true. Undeveloped countries see Mountain Lion as a severe threat to their lives, not an exciting update to their MacBook Pros.

I think they should have said, It's released tomorrow for PAYING customers, otherwise another week for those who already paid and are getting a code. So it's more Aug. 1st release for those who purchased a computer already.

not gone lie, this has taken out all the wind from my sails on what was suppose to be an "exciting" day. it's just becoming a meh thing for me as the time goes on. :(

Knowing Apple, when I heard ML was out, with a RMBP, I thought all I had to do was to login to the useless mac app store and it would start downloading the thing for me. Well, no, I guess the mac app store is not good for this either. Hours and still no code. Looks like I am buying the thing. Apple used to make things easier than this. I am wondering whose idea this was?

Whoever it was that came up with this ass backwards redemption code program should probably be executed. Or at least fired. One of the two.

Whats most annoying here is that they don't let you download until AFTER you get the code. So we've now been waiting 5hrs for the code and then many of us will have several hours of downloading for the full file.

I was actually hoping to get it installed before flying out to Malawi as a member of the Peace Corps. Having iMessage is a great way for me to stay in contact with friends and family while I will be away.

Internet will be sparse and I prefer being able to talk instantly instead of emails.

I guess it still very much is a "first world problem". But some of us give back and technology helps.

Download Messages on Lion, it still works.

Nope - just a "claim number". Whatever that is good for.

I was after tricking it a little (more on that if someone wants), but it wouldn't accept my jpg upload under 1 MB (its stated requirements). I sort of gave up trying.

So did the Lion up-to-date program run this poorly? There are so many more obvious ways of doing this. I can just see the lines of Geniuses checking serial numbers against receipts in some abandoned looking building on the old HP campus.

Since its from the App Store, it will work on all Macs.

My only guess, is its the same as buying it....... except its free with the code :)

To MacBook Air owners who applied for codes earlier today, maybe try going back and doing it again. They've added "MacBook Air" to the list of devices (at the bottom) and this time I didn't get asked for a scan of a proof of purchase.

It went through again and I got a different claim code, and I last tried at 10am eastern (7 hours ago) so it was worth a try.

Initially did it at 8a PST. Now just redid it and it gave me a different confirmation code. I was able to pick Macbook Air both times and wasn't asked to scan anything earlier or now. Will post results should there be any - I am going to try the Lion Diskmaker Utility to do a fresh install of the OS on my MBA after it downloads from the app store.

yes the wait is very annoying but to be fair, it's still July and in the fineprint it states: ...Mountain Lion, redeemable on the Mac App Store, will be emailed within 24 hours of order qualification.

So relax and enjoy your "free" copy tomorrow. The outrage started 24 hours early. :p

jaydubber
Jul 25, 2012, 04:28 PM
For those that have been asked to provide proof of purchase, I ran into the same issue when I accidentally provided the wrong serial number. Instead of the serial number for my new Macbook Retina I provided the serial number for my 2011 Macbook. When I realized this I went back and entered the correct serial number, and it went right through to confirmation without asking for a proof image upload.

So, the decision to prompt for proof or not seems to hinge on serial numbers. At least it did for me.

Also, I called Apple support, and basically, he said that my claim was approved, and to wait up to 72 hours for the email

I found it amazing that while the claim was approved, he said he couldn't give me the code over the phone since he didn't have access. Apple, if you're going to do this, at least allow your support team to manually give the codes, especially if the claim is already approved!

It does say MacBook Air now as a choice but when I put in my serial it says "This is an already claimed serial number."

Seriously, this is annoying. You'd think by buying hardware earliest we'd be first in line for the upgrade but 9hrs later and we're still in limbo.

Its a sign of the times when validating a Microsoft OS upgrade is easier than upgrading OS X.

I know, I know. I'm just annoyed because I had the day off and got in at 6AM PST and its now 3PM and the the problem is unresolved. And lets face it, even at my worst days with Windows I was still able to get a phone rep to validate an installation over the phone within half an hour so you can't blame people for calling out issues that happen under "Tim Cooks Apple".

I sent mine about 8 hours ago and NADA!!!

You would think it would have been more logical to allow the up to date users to enter their info a few days, maybe a week a head of time and have Apple do whatever "verification" they needed to do BEFORE the release date. Then send the emails as they get each user verified or even on the release date and then when release date comes everyone will already have their codes and they won't get bombarded by thousands of people deservedly wanting their upgrades. :(
