Yesterday, we noted (http://www.macrumors.com/2012/07/25/apples-os-x-mountain-lion-up-to-date-program-experiencing-early-hiccups/) that Apple's Up-to-Date program allowing recent Mac purchasers to receive free upgrades to OS X Mountain Lion was experiencing some early hiccups, with users receiving Mac App Store redemption codes that were registering as invalid. Customer support representatives were advising users that Apple was aware of the issue and would be automatically issuing replacement codes but that the process could take up to three days.

http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2012/07/os_x_mountain_lion_server_icons.jpg

While many of these replacement codes are already coming through, users today have begun reporting (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=15334355#post15334355) that Apple is mistakenly sending out codes for the OS X Server components of Mountain Lion rather than Mountain Lion itself.I just got my second code and was able to redeem it. The only problem is when it redeemed it came up with an error saying OSX Server cannot be downloaded because it requires OSX 10.8.0 to run. It seems they sent me a redemption code for server instead of mountain lion. The pdf with the code clearly says that the code is for mountain lion...

My purchased tab only shows OSX Server - no mountain lion...At least half a dozen users have reported the same problem, with the issue presumably affecting a much greater number of users receiving codes today. One user who called Apple about the issue was advised to file another request through Apple's uptodatesupport@apple.com support mechanism.

OS X Server is also available through the Up-to-Date program, but is limited to users who purchased server models of the company's Mac Pro and Mac mini lines.

Pretty sure the Apple "UpToDate program" is just a macro that sends your request directly to the server trashbin.

True, but it wouldnt assigned to your apple ID purchased history! You actually need a redeem code for it to remember in your apple ID history.

Wow, hope these folks get their proper copy of ML.

Apple seems to drop the ball when it comes to software launches through the Mac App store - I seem to remember something wonky with Lion as well.

I guess if/when I get another Mac, I'll definitely wait until both the hardware kinks are worked out and the most up-to-date OS is installed.

This is an unfortunate indicator that patience is a good thing when it comes to technology.

Well, honestly though, it didn't happen when Jobs was around. You can't say he's the reason, obviously, as that's a heck of a trickle down, but overall the place doesn't seem as tight and deliberate a ship as it did before. I'm too lazy to dig up the little mistakes to make a case right now, but someone should.

Management changes can change a company. That's not exceptionally controversial. I don't think anyone's arguing Cook has made things run more smoothly.

Anyone else feel pretty bad about Apple's customer satisfaction skills with this deal?

I'm looking at it this way ....

This "up to date" program would have better been handled by sending these codes the day before the public release of ML.

That way, those of us who spent over a thousand bucks on a new machine with the promise of being updated to ML would be completely happy with the purchase.

Unfortunately, as always is the case with Apple and most large tech corps, they are only caring about making more money - trying to get as many $20.00 purchases as possible. Leaving those who just bought a shiny new Mac (like me) in the dark.

Not a huge deal - it's just a few days. But still, sour apple taste in my mouth for sure.

Exactly. This is a bunch of extra work for both users and Apple. Now we know how App developers feel when for no reason App approvals get delayed or denied. Once again the human element at Apple fails.

And for the idiots who blather, "just buy it". Many of us already did. I got sick of waiting and bought it for my rMBP yesterday. I wanted to use the new code for one of my other 2 MBP and 27-inch iMac. What a complete failure of execution.

Same thing happened to me. When I called they put me on the phone with a "high level" Apple support person who told me I was now in a different waiting line and should get yet another code (code number 3 for me) within 72 hours.

This is slowly turning into a bit of a nightmare for Apple! Hopefully they fix this with the next major update. By and large, the App Store seems to be handling the load just fine. It's just this up-to-date process that is messing up.

I wonder if they meant to give Server versions as a complimentary upgrade for the inconvenience?

I'm sorry to be a nit-picker, but there was actually never an OS called Puma, it was merely a code name at the time, you know, like Whistler was for XP? And with it being 10.1, i'd nearly have given you credit but 10.0 'Cheetah' would have been better :P

I've waited 2 days for my code to arrive. Or some kind of response from Apple. I bought a refurbished iMac a few weeks ago and it is ellegable as far as I can tell. I tried applying again but it said the serial was already claimed so I know they got my first application. No code, statues or rejection email. Checked my details both when filling the forms and afterwards with my ID data. I have given in and bought it. Not at all happy; especially since it was my birthday and would have been a nice gift from Apple, in a manner of speaking. Instead I got hours of waiting for nothing. I've been a Mac user since about 1987 or so and i'm starting to feel let down more and more these past couple of years. Only positive toward Apple is the extremely affordable cost of recent major releases. Perhaps the two things are tied together? Just as well Windows and Android are so sheet or I might consider other options. Not really, not yet, but that does express how I feel at the moment.

The computers that are eligible should have just come with an "gift card" to redeem for that product.

No reason for people to have to sign up later...

What a mess. If we don't get our codes by the end of the weekend -- it will be extremely frustrating. The worst part is, it takes a lot of the excitement out of getting the new software.

The whole "Steve never would have let this happen" statement is a bunch of bull. I can hardly remember a smooth-sailing release of any of their products or software.

I also feel bad for all of the folks over at Apple that are having to work even more (and over the weekend) because of this massive glitch.

So easy to see that Steve is not at the helm. Whether that really matters, hard to say, but I will say that this release has been disappointing from the hiccups to the bugs I'm experiencing in simple things. Some stuff should just not be fixed if it isn't broke. Feels more like a window service pack (along with appropriate blunders) than a release worthy of the Apple moniker.

Yeap you are right, but think about it. They cant even pull up with this easy way. So I dont think they will be able to do an innovating way! :D

The point is to simplify the process so silly little mistakes like this doesn't happen. We get automatic updates for iOS just fine.

exactly so however it won't know the date that it is sold unless there is grace period.

So use a different criteria and simplify. After all, software drives hardware sales. Buy the machine, get the corresponding updates.

They just want to make the people getting it for free have to wait as long as possible so they get fed up and just spend the $20

So let's say 20,000 people bought a new computer that qualifies. People being impatient, estimate 5% can't wait and buy ML. So Apple might squeak out an additional $20,000 in profit. That's the same as 10 iMacs. Mmmmmmm . . . No.

I was so sick of waiting so I just went ahead and torrented Mountain Lion and will apply the code to my Apple ID once I received it. Like many others have said I think Apple should've given out the code in advance before release to prevent such a fiasco that is happening at this moment. I think they are also taking advantage of the situation as such to reduce the load on their servers by letting the people who wants to pay for mountain lion download it first. Which isn't by any means the right thing to do.

Just called AppleCare about this, and first thing the automated prompt asked was "are you calling about Mountain Lion?"

Obviously having a major failure on this, rep told me that the system was down and the engineers said it could take 72 hours to get the system up (think that is bs).

He also said that there is too much load on the servers for downloads and that they are waiting to send codes.... again i think not.

Anyway, Apple does realize what a F-up this is, but like others who do not know better, they are not taking responsibility for their mistake which in this day an age, just means more bad press and spoken words on social, etc. Everyone knows, acknowledge something and stop the bleeding early or things can get out of control quickly... Apple needs to rethink their up-to-date strategy. Why require a redemption code at all? Software update and the App Store already know what Mac you have. Just push the new OS to eligible machines.

I speculated about and last night finally tried a restore from network (option-cmd-R at boot) on my 2012 Air. It seemed commonsensical that Apple's side of the update connection would recognize the machine as eligible for ML and push it over the wire.

Nope. No such luck. It pulled over Lion instead. I guess there needs to be an EFI update or some such to get network restore to pull Mountain Lion.

I think you need to realise this is not school and this is certainly not a debate on ethics and morality. If a user wants to complain that delivery of the OS was not efficient and thus is a 'shame' then so be it, you're not entitled to place yourself on a pedestal for all to look up to.

After getting a valid code on my 3rd try, I now have ML installed on my 2012 macbook air, it took about 20 minutes or less to install. Before I ran the installer, I made a bootable copy of ML on a USB drive. And yes, ML Server is still available to me. This code stuff has nothing to do with you buying Mountain Lion. The code is only for those that recently purchased a Mac and are trying to get their free upgrade to Mountain Lion. Everyone is able to purchase Mountain Lion for $20 for up to 10 Macs without any problem.
I'm aware. I'm eligible for up-to-date so i don't want to buy ML.

Folks I just threw the head up and went to buy Mountain Lion as I was giving up on the up to date program delivering before I head off on Saturday for a week. Interestingly having registered the serial of my MBR over 24 hours back I went to the App store and purchased in frustration only to find that on buying it told me that I had ALREADY purchased but I could download for free again. The purchase date is showing some two weeks back in or around the date my MBR was shipped. Hope this helps some or maybe I have just been lucky......... :)

Mind taking a screenshot of the purchased date?

I think we shouldn't be publicising these events. Apple is doing their best for consumers. They will make this right. We don't want this kind of negativity surrounding the launch of the greatest desktop operating system ever released.

Everyone don't be afraid to try Bluethree's tip. When you click on "buy" it will ask you to confirm the purchase if Mountain Lion is not registered as purchased by you. If the AppStore acutally sees that you have a redeem code it will no ask you to confirm but just tell you that you can download it.

PS: funny thing is that it took me 5 minutes to download and now I have to wait 30 minutes for it to write on my slow USB key ...

From everything I can gather:

THE END IS NEAR!!! People aren't getting their code immediately:

Apple sets alert code to DEFCON 1

over this issue.

It's not clear though if that is DEFCON 1 like the military uses or if it relates to the hacker organization DEFCON.

Ok, so... I tried BlueThree's method. Yeah, got screwed. Apparently mine hasn't gone through or something like that because it instantly took out of my iTunes credit. So... it's downloading and I've email Apple support acting like an idiot saying I typed my code in, selected mountain lion, then noticed as it was downloading it had deducted from my iTunes credit so the code must have been bad. So I asked for a new code + a refund on the credit. Figure, screw it, it's already a complete mess, so at least I'll have ML and just work it out with them later.

I think one thing a lot of people are forgetting is the simple fact that Offering this Up to Date Program is something only apple does. What other company gives a free software upgrade just because you purchased hardware that doesnt even require the upgrade in the recent past?

So what if this seemingly simple task has been screwed up twice? waiting a few days for something for free is hardly worth getting frustrated over. Before downloads you would have had to wait for it in the mail anyways.

And do you really think this is worth someone losig their job over? I mean what if you got fired for making one simple mistake? People make mistakes... and this is fixable and doesnt adversly affect or cost anyone anything (do not count people who decided to buy it anyways, they are not responsible for your impatience)

I called Apple's HQ and asked to speak with Customer Relations and the very nice lady on the phone told me to go ahead and purchase Mountain Lion then once I get my code contact iTunes support and request a refund and provide my code to iTunes support as proof then enter the ML code to redeem then suspend the download as I'll already have the new OS installed. Its convoluted, but I'm downloading ML right now. I hope Apple gets its ***** together for the next launch *sigh*.

Actually, almost every company does this. When Adobe announced a new CS version (usually every year around April) but it wont be for sale for another month or two, everyone who purchased it in that time frame gets a free upgrade. Microsoft used to do with with XP when Vista was announced, Vista when Windows 7 was announced and now with Windows 8 (although they now charge a $15 upgrade fee for it) but it's always good practice to offer free upgrades when you're within a certain time limit of announcing a product, otherwise why would people continue to purchase the old version of your product?

It looked to me like the code will only get us a copy of Mountain Lion for the eligible computer (new MBP Retina) and not for any other macs we own.

If so, I'll have to pay the $19.99 anyhow to update my other 3 Macs.

So what's the point? What am I missing here?

The code redeems OS X and it is then marked against your Apple ID. You can then use the "Purchases" tab on the Mac App Store to upgrade each of your other personal Macs (or by downloading it on one then copying over the InstallESD file to the other Macs).

At least, that's how it worked with OS X Lion.

The "Server" version is a small, extension of 10.8 (about 300-400 MB's). It adds server features but you need 10.8 installed first, which makes this whole thing even more of a mess. Sigh

(and yes, you can use the server version on any Mac)

Unless you're monitoring multiple systems/user accounts, there's really no need. You can try it out, it simply adds OS X server app's. I'm not certain about its removal, so you may be stuck with features you don't need. Check it out online, and keep it handy, you never know if you might need it after all :).

I requested my update at 6:30am yesterday. I purchased my mac from the online apple store, but when I plugged in my serial number it made me upload a receipt proving the date of my purchase. Since the only thing I got from Apple was a confirming email, I printed the email to a PDF file and tried to upload it. I received an error message saying they won't allow PDF files, only .jpg, .tiff or one other format. I eventually figured out how to convert the file to a .jpg, but I wondered about how ridiculous all of this is when clearly they know I bought the computer from them. I can even confirm the date of purchase by doing a warranty check online.

This is the first mac I've ever used after being a microsoft user for 30+ years. I was induced to buy a mac because I was so impressed by how elegant and simple to use the Iphone and Ipad has been so far. Needless to say, I'm at a loss as to how a company that can design such elegant and flawless technology products could bungle up a simple $20.00 coupon code to upgrade the operating system of my mac. And after all the known problems, no formal statement by Apple even acknowledging the issue. I'm just at a loss as to how Apple could execute so poorly here.

When I read "but people just like to complain i guess..." I experience that statement as a complaint. In fact it reminds my of an irritating aunt who complains a lot.

There are a lot of folks on this thread who are disappointed by Apple setting an expectation that has not been met (yet). Many are excited to run ML and some team at Apple has dropped the ball. So Apple set an expectation and it didn't come true in the way that many wanted. End of the world? No. Disappointment? Yes.

The only remedy I can suggest is for those who are having code redemption issues is to grab a torrent of ML GM build [OS X 10.8 (12A269)] and install that until your redemption code issue gets resolved.

If you need to make a clean install of ML, just search for the method to make a bootable USB key (Mountain) Lion install.

Honestly, I've been running ML on my MacBookPro6,2 when the GM build was made available. I purchased it legitimately once it was made available on MAS and now in the process of installing it on my Macmini4,1 and Hackintosh server.

Really, if you want to be douchebags, get the torrent and redeem the OS X Server redemption code as retribution for their incompetence.

Incidentally, I've tried entering the request three times and received three different confirmation numbers. I only find this interesting because others have attempted to redo their entry requests and their serial number has been flagged as already having been entered. I wonder why it allows me to enter my serial number three times and doesn't flag that I've already made the request previously. It would seem there are a number of bugs in the data entry system that Apple has designed for this upgrade program.

Correct, the GM was and is 12A269. I think 256 was the release before the GM.

That's very strange as the build I have installed is/was listed as the GM. I have saved all the DP's and the GM build was listed as 12A256.

I'm downloading it via the App Store, it warned me that ML 10.8 was already installed. I'll have to check this out.

UPDATE: This is bizarre. I have my OS X files stored on another SATA drive in my Mac Pro. I'm downloading the MAS 10.8, but went into my software drive to check the GM release which I am currently running. It shows that Apple is downloading OVER that saved file, and not in the Applications folder of my system. So apparently Apple's App Store found the location of my GM 10.8 and is re-writing over it. Very odd.

Compared to the 128KB to 512KB "Fat Mac" upgrade program, this is a dream. And then there was the "Mail in your Newton and $125, and we'll install a software update that fixes handwriting" fiasco. (They never got handwriting recognition to work).

But the whopper of them all had to be the Centris PowerPC upgrade: For around $900, they replaced your Motorola-based motherboard with a blazing fast PowerPC-based motherboard... Except that these wildly-hyped, first-gen PowerPC Macs were much slower than the 68040 Macs they replaced. Oops!!

Just buy it now, and ask them to credit you the price. I just did, and Apple was happy to refund as a one time exception.

I guess I was not aware of these programs (If this is the case with Adobe CS, I got screwed into paying for an update by a phone rep then).

But I was referring to Hardware companies, does Dell offer an upgrade to the OS in these cases? Ive never heard of such a program, and I doubt microsoft would take care of this for Dell.

Still my main point is that people are being way to impatient over this issue.

But this latest screwup makes me wonder if Apple is using Chinese teenagers who can't read English to do verification instead of using a computer -_-

The Chinese assemble the hardware, not the software.
