I need a new monitor...the one I'm looking at says it runs at 1600-900 native resolution (has both vga and dvi out)...right now (using snow leopard updated) when i open system preferences /displays it shows 1440-900 (what I'm using right now) 1600-1000 and 1600-1200 as top 3....so if i buy the new monitor will it run a native 1600-900? (even though at present osx doesn't show that option)

note: right now I'm using vga cable but with new monitor i will use dvi...would that change mini resolutions and thus allow native 1600-900?

I can't answer your question since I don't have a 1440*900 monitor, but even if it doesn't support that resolution you should be able to force it to whatever you want in com.apple.boot.plist.

Yep OS X only shows resolutions that currently make sense, so you are able to use the native resolution of any display.
