How to tell if there's unread notifications?

The notification center menu bar icon doesn't seem to change if has notifications. If I miss the growl-like popup, or have it disabled, how do I tell if there's unread notifications?

This is one thing Apple inexplicably changed from the Developer Previews. In the first two, the Notification Center menubar icon was a dot within a circle that would light up blue when you had unread notifications:
