Download and use OmniDiskSweeper, (http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omnidisksweeper/) it will provide a sorted list of files/folders to see where your space went

Do you by any chance have 6 GB of RAM?

If so, my best guess is that that space is reserved for when you hibernate your mac.
(The RAM has to be put somewhere.)

I have 4 i think.
the sleepimage file is actually 4.3GB and i also have swapfiles that weigh the rest.

is that normal?
I dont remember noticing that on Lion.

thanks

It is normal and you always had it and just did not see it as it is a hidden file. Your problem lies elsewhere.

Maybe the recovery partition? I don't know how big it is, but you might want to check disk utility.
