View Full Version : That pesky moving weather widget is finally fixed! Kinda...

So ever since Leopard the stock weather widget would move down a few pixels on the screen after a restart when the weather loaded again. It's been extremely annoying watching that thing bounce all over the screen, wondering why Apple couldn't work with Yahoo to fix that when every new Mac user sees it.

Well, it seems in Mountain Lion that the widget still moves, but resets it's position to default after a restart. So it's kind of fixed, but wish they could find a way for it not to move period.

I think you have… the stock weather widget still moves for me. It once went completely somewhere off-screen in ML!!!

How can there be no fix for this after 5 years? They ship millions of Macs and one of the first things new users see is this weather widget bouncing all over the place. If it's Yahoo's issue, than Apple should ditch the widget and build a new one.

I've been using Macs since Leopard was released and I haven't seen any "bouncing" or other movement of the weather widget. You are referring to the one in the dashboard, correct? I've been using it for years and have seen nothing out of the ordinary.

This was in leopard? I only noticed it in Lion. Doesn't seem to be doing it for ML though.

I'm using OSX from snow leopard 10.6 and:
on SL - it's moving
on Lion - it's moving
on ML - it's moving

It's basically happens because when the weather icon(the sun) changes to something that is bigger than the icon before, then the bigger icon pushes the whole widget down. And when the icon get's smaller again, the widget position stay where the bigger icon pushed it.

I just modified the weather widget code, it looks like I fixed the moving :D But I will test it for a few days to be sure it's got fixed. Also I fixed the "H:" "L:" translation. There was a bug in the code that prevents these to get translated.

Might just hide the dashboard and be done with it. Dashboard is so 10.4.:D Apple barely supports it anymore.

I think I fixed it:
Download (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6265320/WthrFIXd.wdgt.zip)

I modified the original weather widget, fixed the moving, added an option to make it IOS6-style. Fixed "H:" and "L:" translation. It's a standalone widget so it won't overwrite the original.

Here is a pic from the new style (notice the new checkbox in the settings to enable the new ios6 style):

Word, this was actually the first thing I did. Make sure you save that widget for future reference haha.

There was another widget a German dude fixed back in Snow Leopard that I've been using that does basically the same thing nyolc8 did :D

Even though I'm not experiencing the moving widget nonsense, I'll use this widget for posterity's sake. Many thanks!

Thank you all :) I updated it, cleaned up the additional codes for the ios6 style, achieved the same function with much less code, and disabled some original unneccessary code (so maybe it loads faster): Download Updated (http://nyolc8.deviantart.com/art/Apple-Weather-Widget-Fixed-iOS6-Style-UPDATED-318718662)

Happens on both themes, (normal and iOS 6) as well as in day and night.

When editing the widget's settings however, everything's fine.

I appreciate what the developer is doing here, but I'd prefer that Apple makes the 2 second fix to the code. They have 60,000 employees...someone must have told Cupertino that this widget doesn't maintain it's position on screen over the past 5 years.

Just a regular MBP. I'll try it out some more. I have both the regular widget and yours open at the same time, and they have only moved once so far. I noticed I'm using Modified.2 though – would the latest version help maybe?

The jumping is fixed in the first modified version, so it shouldn't move with .2 too. Where do you put your weather widget on the screen? Do you have the low temp enabled? If it's jumps again, try to change the show low temps setting.

I have it set up like this now. The one on the right is Apple's own widget. I'm not a hundred percent sure whether I had the lows enabled or not the last time it moved. It's possible.

Try with lows turned on, then try with lows turned off. I tested it with both option, but it might related to that.

After 6 years, I've given up. I hide the Dashboard and use the app Living Earth which provides a Retina quality weather widget that sits in the task bar and launches on load.

Apple only has Dashboard on by default to show new users they can have different desktop pages. Other than that, it's pretty much dead. No one develops those widgets anymore so Apple might as well just kill it for OS XI.

Don't feel comfortable taking candy from strangers.

I read this post because i have had the same problem with the weather widget. There were enough positive answers to the download so i got it & installed it. It works beautifully. Thanks to nyolc8 for putting in the time & work to helping us all out. I am careful about downloading other peoples tweaks BUT will do so if the general review is positive. If i didn't take the "risk" sometimes - I would have a much less usable mac.

It doesn't seem to me to be " taking candy from strangers" - more about helping myself.

To me - every app maker is a stranger & I would have no cool stuff on my mac if i worried about the implications of installing stuff from unknown sources. It seems to me that the world is teaching everyone to be more & more in a state of fear, which is so sad.

Bookmark that link so when you install OS XI (or 10.10 if they go that route) you can re-install it again.
