Change Messages emoticons/smileypack?

In Lion-, you were able to go to Show Package Contents of Messages or iChat, modify the Standard.smileypack folder and replace the emoticons with other custom emoticons. This option seems to have disappeared…does anyone know how this could be accomplished?

I believe it's hardcoded into Messages to use specific emoji's installed in the OS. (edit > special characters > Emoji)
