View Full Version : Bitrate (for mp3s) via Finder's 'Get Info' is missing

I have noticed, much to my annoyance, that when I right click on an mp3,and select 'Get Info',the bitrate of the file is no longer listed in the Finder's info window.Instead,it has been replaced in Mountain Lion with the track's sample rate. For someone who downloads and converts mp4 files into mp3s on a daily basis, the missing bitrate info via Finder is a pain. It seems that to get this info I have to drag the mp3 file into iTunes, which I don't wish to do. It was all so simple in previous versions of OS X to find out this information via a right click of the mouse.
I have tried TotalFinder and XtraFinder applications,in the hope that they would add on the bitrate info, but they don't.
Any ideas,anybody?

Yeah, despite the fanbois' fanatical shouting, Microsoft does a lot of things really well.

Displaying such metadata in Windows Explorer is just one of them. I believe TotalFinder supports plugins, you in theory you could write your own code to scan and display metadata from the files you are handling. I am not aware of an existing plugin that does that.

I would, but sadly I am not a programmer really, I am only moderately adept at writing VBA code for Excel, but my programming forays have yet to step up to more involved uses.

What about pressing Option, doesn't it show a different information?

Huh, I've really got to start playing around with the option key more... there seems to be a lot of fairly useful settings hidden behind it.

Although, bitrate is still not there when using the option key, only sample rate.

I think it may depend on the file. I get bitrate from Finder when I use the Option key to Show Inspector:

Aren't you on snow leopard though?

In 10.8, I get the sample rate when using Get Info, and nothing (just "--") when using Option + Show Inspector

Edit: I get -- when using the Inspector on an .m4a file, but I get the details (including sample rate but excluding bit rate) on an .mp3.

Yes. Did it change in Lion/ML? Do you have an .mp3 file to test? I don't know if it's different for different file types.

Edit: m4a:

Is this good enough for what you're trying to accomplish?

Unfortunately, it opens up a separate app, but it is still easily accessible from the right-click menu.

Thanks to everybody for their help, but,as you all know by now,Apple has made it impossible to view the bit rate of mp3s via Finder's Get Info. Yeah, a GET INFO selection where I can't GET the INFO I need. Mountain Lion an improvement? I don't think so.
Thanks again,everyone.Appreciated.

Hi,
Thanks for suggesting this unknown-to-me application. I can now see that if I right-click on an mp3,move down to Services, and then select the MP3-Info application,it opens and displays the bit rate.
Cheers Ahmadq! Appreciated.
