I'll buy one for the family iMac. I am actually glad that Apple has a corded version, because I could never get my teen daughter to remember to either turn off or charge a wireless mouse.
I don't use that computer much, but when I do I am always irritated that there is no scroll wheel on it. It's always a minor and temporary irritation, but now that there is a scroll mouse that nicely matches the iMac G4, Airport Base, and white Creature II's...
I have an MX1000 already so i wouldn't even buy it if it was wireless. Also i HATE the shape of the Apple mouse Pro so i will more than likely hate this too. I could never pick the bloody thing up without clicking it...

the poll is inclomplete. it should also give an option
[ ] yes, if it was wireless
-> seeing the number of posts in the main thread stating just this opinion I figure it should be a quite high percentage (including me) that would consider buying a bluetooth version of it.

Only when its BT.
Wired mice are a PITA.
( Its been impossible to drag me away from Logitech mice - but my MX1000 can be diverted to PC uses at work or something )
I agree...will buy when it's a BT as long as the price doesn't increase.
Its almost certain the price will increase. Those BT modules aren't free.

Had to go with maybe, but the answer is probably yes. Just went with maybe because I don't know when I'll buy it (and therefore it might be a better alternative, like a wireless version, when I get around to it). Also, it might be an item on this years Christmas wish list, and then I technically wouldn't be buying it, would I...? ;)

No, as my Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse is superior with real buttons you can see and a hand-hugging shape that's comfortable over the long haul.
Apple's looks good, but it's not ergonomic.

and if it does?
i find it interesting that people are never satisfied. this should be ok to an extent. but it should not be exaggerated.
the next thing we would see is, Apple offering a bluetoothed mighty mouse and people would then say, "awwww... battery life is only 2 months...".
sometimes it is better to be thankful for what we have and what we get. everybody would be more happier on this earth.

my guess is that it'd make a little click-noise, my V500's scroll pad does that.

Some obvious missing options :D
( ) Yes, when the Bluetooth version is out.
( ) No, and neither should anybody else, ever. Even though I haven't tried it.
( ) Yes, because I prefer one button, and this is Apple's best one-button mouse ever.
( ) Yes, because nobody should ever be allowed to have a one button mouse, and this is a great multi-button mouse.
( ) No, because the shape and size are awful and you can't improve upon the classic scrollwheel.
( ) Yes, because the shape and size are great and so is the 360° trackball.
( ) No, because I just bought another mouse and must defend it against all competition!
( ) Yes, but I'm still trying to figure out why I need it.
( ) No, I already have plenty of mice--but I'll still complain about how this mouse is wrong for me.
( ) Yes. See how shiny?

I definitely won't buy one until I test one out. Here are some reasons why:
If you want to scroll up and down but not sideways you are bound to do it at least a little bit by accident with this mouse because you can't perfectly move the ball in your desired direction. Or can you?
There is not a wireless option as mentioned before over and over again.
It sure seems like it would be easy to accidentally bump the left and the right buttons. (On the mouse you would have to constantly hover your fingers over the mouse until you want to touch the two sensor buttons to click the mouse. Also you would have to move the mouse with your palm to avoid touching the buttons when you aren't clicking them. This is different from how we all use our mice today. Try hovering your fingers over your mouse buttons for more than a minute and moving the mouse with your palm. It is pretty uncomfortable isn't it?)
How are you supposed to pick up the mouse without touching the side buttons?
Why are there 5 buttons but the two side buttons act as only one? It seems like Apple is stealing a button that we would be able to use since there are only 4 buttons feature-wise.
Wouldn't you be bound to scroll while you are clicking the middle button?
I don't think the shape is as good as it could be to make it at least a somewhat comfortable mouse.
I want to test all of these things out to see if it works as it should. If I am satisfied with most of the results I get with the mouse then I will probably get one. If not, then I am glad I tested it first. Right now I am far from satisfied as you can tell from my list above. This mouse doesn't seem to be very user friendly at all.

Always a good plan :) Same here.
If you want to scroll up and down but not sideways you are bound to do it at least a little bit by accident with this mouse because you can't perfectly move the ball in your desired direction. Or can you?
You can turn off horizontal scrolling entirely if you wish--but if you don't, I'm not sure how it behaves. I've heard conflicting reports.
NOT true. That WOULD be bad :o The buttons have PHYSICAL CLICK just like any other mouse, and you rest your hand on the button area just like any other mouse. (Emphasis added because a lot of people share the same misunderstanding :) ) No risk of accidental bumping. No change to how you hold the mouse. The touch sensors are NOT for clicking--a physical hinge does that just like the old Pro Mouse--but rather they are for telling left-clicks from right-clicks.
How are you supposed to pick up the mouse without touching the side buttons?
Those side areas used to be used to pick up the mouse in mid-drag without letting go--and it seems that that usage is now lost. BUT it never worked that well anyway to me, and I almost never needed it. Picking up a mouse in mid-drag is always going to be an awkward thing to be avoided. However, you could always disable those buttons to use them the old way. And supposedly the tension on those buttons is enough to prevent accidental clicks--they aren't "buttons" in the sense that other mice have thumb buttons. They are a force-sensing mechanism of some kind. I believe they do move slightly when squeezed, but not with the feel of a normal button.
Why are there 5 buttons but the two side buttons act as only one? It seems like Apple is stealing a button that we would be able to use since there are only 4 buttons feature-wise.
Apple doesn't advertise 5 buttons, and in truth, there's only ONE button in the conventional physical sense (left, right, and middle-click all use the same physical mechanism--the whole shell clicks down just like other Apple mice). Calling those side things "buttons" is misleading--it's a force-sensitive squeeze function, NOT a pair of clickable buttons. They don't feel like buttons nor work like buttons. After all, you can't squeeze something from just one side--so squeeze is a single programmable function. (But if someone finds a way to squeeze a mouse from one side and not the other, I will applaud with the sound of one hand clapping :) )
Wouldn't you be bound to scroll while you are clicking the middle button?
You could, just like with any scroll-wheel mouse. I find in practice that it seldom happens, but it's something to think about when assigning a function to that button. For instance, Apple's default function is Dashboard. Scrolling while entering Dashboard would be a pretty harmless mistake. (And if you want ONLY a middle button and no scrolling, you can turn off scrolling--on either or both axes independently.)
I don't think the shape is as good as it could be to make it at least a somewhat comfortable mouse.
Probably not the mouse for you--everyone has different preferences that way. I like Apple's mouse shape better than any shape I've tried. I hate those huge clunky "ergonomic" mice that take the weight of your whole hand. Talk about tiring! But many people would discover the opposite, for the way they work.

Since we're on the subject of adding "As soon as it's wireless", I request an option for "Already bought one". :p
I had a veritable moral dilemma: whether to answer truthfully or to follow the spirit of the poll. I already bought one, so "no" I'm not going to buy one, but "yes" I did buy one... Should I have said maybe?? :p
Then again, Apple hasn't charged me yet (I got an email saying my order will be delayed). Does this mean I technically haven't bought it yet?...
But anyway, almost everyone who's posted on macrumors the past two days hasn't actually used/tested the mouse. I will reserve my judgment until I receive it. The idea of having a multi-button mouse that is designed basically like a one-button mouse sounds like a good idea to me. I'm sure I'll use the scrolling feature at least.

Hmm, another question. I have a Apple BT Mouse, and I hold my mouse w/ 2 fingers on the top, does that mean, I will have to lift one finger up when clicking a certain side. I don't know if this is goin' to feel wierd or not. I gotta try this. But probably not until a BT one comes out.
And for all those that prefer not to deal w/ batteries, just get some rechargeable ones. I always have some ready, and charged when needed. I never turn my mouse off... that's probably not a good thing (wasting life on the rechargeables), but whatever. Speaking of rechargeable batteries, when do you think they'll come out w/ a rechargeable dock for wireless mouses, if ever. Wouldn't that make sense?
I love my Apple BT Mouse, it's perfect for me. I like how the whole shell is a button, and you can click it from almost any spot on the shell.

You don't have to do anything special for a left click. For a right click, you must lift your left finger, or at least be resting it only VERY lightly. It seems that most people already have that "left lift" habit even if they don't realize it. But not everyone.
If you have both fingers resting on the mouse, it's always a left-click.
Re batteries: I don't want myself OR my planet to have to deal with battery waste. But I can't stand my mouse cord when I'm traveling with my PB. So what I want is rechargeables for sure, but ALSO the ability to run off the USB charging cord and spare the batteries. (Like an iPod in a way.) And please no charger--just a cord. Why have a cord PLUS a stand?

I second that. :)
Apple mice always get the wires slightly stuck underneath -- just enough to prevent it from being pressed down and therefore highly annoying. (Perhaps I have bad mouse technique?)
Anyway, I'm intrigued by the diagonality and the scroll balliness, but the squeezing looks like carpal tunnel aches to me.
Will probably stick with my trusty Mx500 (and the wife's got an Mx700, God bless 'er), but I would like to try the Mighty Mouse out some time.

I'd try before you judge. The touch sensors do NOT make it easier to trigger accidentally: you must still click down just like any mouse. And the squeeze function (which is optional anyway) is a force-sensing mechanism, not conventional buttons, and reportedly is calibrated so that accidental squeezes are unlikely. I've never read a review that complained about that happening. It will be different for each person's habits, of course--but don't dismiss it for everyone too soon.

I hated the name iPod too :) "Pod?" How generic and irrelevant! This thing plays music! I thought it should have name related to that. But I'm used to it by now--and I never thought it was a bad product, but I did think it was an odd venture to experiment with!
Now... Mighy Mouse I don't think I'll get used to :o but it's only a name. (Apple really DID paint themselves into a bit of a corner, using the term Pro Mouse for their simple model.)
That's pretty impressive to read all of the negativity posted about the introduction of the iPod and then look at where it is today.
And, as a music player, the iPod experience/UI today is virtually unchanged today vs. back then. It's not like the first iPod was a flop and then Apple learned--it was "music done right" from the very start, and has only improved with time. And prices always fall for storage, but people ARE still paying $399 for music players today.

I don't really want it. I prefer my one button Apple mouse. I've used various Macs since I was 5 years old. 11 years later, I still love the one button. In theory, the idea of the Mighty Mouse is great. In execution, however, I don't think it's that great. If you want a nice 2 button mouse getThe Mouse (http://www.dvforge.com/themouse.shtml) from DV Forge. It's true multi-button, has a real scroll wheel with it's own button, fully mapable buttons, and a bluetooth version for all you wireless nuts. Nice effort Apple, but you've been bested.

I wonder... I don't see Apple bundling this mouse until they have a BT version, because right now, they offer BT kb/mouse upgrades for all of their desktops, and it would be a difficult sell to go from the mighty mouse to the one-button BT mouse for extra money.
So I still hope hope hope that a BT version of this is around the corner. :)

Good point, even regardless of cost. I suspect a BT version AND bundling (or at least BTO) of the Mighty is on the way.
Making it standard on PowerMacs is a no-brainer. They could go either way with the iMac (as long as you can BTO it), and the Mini already offers the choice.

I'm just waiting for the day when laptop batteries work like iPods or cells, and you just recharge it once every two or three days, and do away with that last remaining cable, annoyingly snaking out of the right-hand side of my iBook.... :DWhat we REALLY need is gear that runs through induction, and desks with built-in induction coils. (My model for this is those electric toothbrushes or Candela rechargeable candles that charge just by putting them on their charging base... no visible electrodes, and any orientation of the device will work.) That way, you could just place your laptop, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc. on your desk, and they'd all be charged/powered BY the desk (which would, of course, have to be plugged into the wall). Add Bluetooth/WiFi/USB wireless to the mix, and voilà! Totally wireless computing.

Cables bothered me five years ago. If Apple mad it BT and powerful enough to last 6 months of considerable use, then it would have to be nuclear powered and everyone on the board would be complaining about the price. As it is, there are moans about a small wirey flex that is barely noticeable.
Oh well. Takes all sorts I spose.

I picked up the mouse from the Apple Store in Regents Street, and I am very happy with it. There is still a lot of misinformation going around about this mouse, so I would urge people to try it out for themselves!
You can turn off horizontal scrolling entirely if you wish--but if you don't, I'm not sure how it behaves. I've heard conflicting reports.
It is very easy to scroll vertically and horizontally. In fact, it's quite difficult to scroll diagonally.
The scroll ball is, in my opinion, much much better than any scroll wheel I've used.
Those side areas used to be used to pick up the mouse in mid-drag without letting go--and it seems that that usage is now lost.
In actual fact, you can still do this. The side buttons don't function when the mouse is being clicked, and, interestingly, when the mouse isn't touching a surface.

Interesting question will be how this can be integrated into gaming... I can see a lot of uses for it in X-Plane and other flight sims. It would be even better if it could operate up in the air sort of like the MacAlley AirSticks which I love. BT would be a big plus on top of that!

I came back with the same conclusion when I left the Apple store today.
Btw what a sight to see on the Tax Free weekend, that store was sooo packed with people buying that the line circled around the store twice.
From listening to some people there asking questions a whole bunch were switchers.
The Dell cart in the mall had about 15 - 20 people in line as compared to about 120 - 150 at the Apple store.

I got it and like it. I think it's aimed mostly at people who have been using a one-button mouse (like me), not for people who are already used to multi-button mice. These people are used to a different feel, whereas the Mighty Mouse to me feels like the one-button (non-BT) mouse in terms of shape and weight, except with more functionality.
Maybe they're trying to transition people from one-button to multi-button mice to coincide with the upcoming Intel switch? Then again, I've always wondered why there were little "tabs" on the sides of the Apple mice. They correspond to where the side buttons are on the Mighty Mouse. Maybe this change has been in the works for years?? If this is the case, the fact that the BT mouse also has these tabs might mean a BT Mighty Mouse is on the way!

I got back from Cuba 2 days ago. I've been out of contact with the world of Apple for 2 weeks - so I was kinda floored when I saw this! Ordered it straight away. It's meant to have a 7-day wait, but it shipped within 24 hours and according to tracking has made it as far as Stanstead airport (should arrive tomorrow!!)

I have used windows most of my life, and after switching to Apple just several months ago, I love thier one-button mouse! After being on a windows computer for several hours my hand would start to hurt along with my brain! (mostly my right index finger, the one I used to left-click with would start to ache.) With the Apple one button mouse I use two fingers to click on button, and my hand doesn't hurt anymore!
I just wish they would add a scroll ball to my BT mouse.
But as for me, I will not buy one (atleast not in the near future) :)

Funny, the other day one of my friends said the opposite thing pretty much - he tried a BT mouse, but found it less responsive than his corded mouse. Mind you, he does a lot of intense graphic and video design work, as well as gaming, where I could see the extra responsiveness of a wired connection is a huge benefit.
In the end, to each his own - we all have different needs and different likes! :)

i have one now. played around with one in a store and liked it so thought it would be a good purchase. i like it better than the logitech mx500 one i have. but i'd love to get a bluetooth version as well. the wired version doesn't bother me so much right now as i have an acd for my powerbook at work and just have this mouse plugged into the back of the display all the time.
i do like the feel of the scroll ball and love the horizontal scrolling ability (i'd been eyeing the microsoft mice that also have this feature, but didn't want to support the evil empire by buying one). my only gripes - it's lighter than i'd like, and the cord is a wee bit short (in comparison to my logitech mouse). oh, and i like that it's not shaped specifically for a specific hand (right or left). i switch off every now and then to prevent repetitive motion issues.

I'm having a little discomfort with the side buttons and may turn them off as I keep activating Expóse with them. Also, there seems to be some applications that do not recognize it properly. Otherwise, very happy and will most likely furnish each computer with one.

Ugh, it's so hard to click twice.
Why make a mouse with dual-button functionality that isn't configurable to set one button as a double-click? Seems pretty stupid to me. Especially since so much in Mac OS X involves double-clicking things. Or any OS for that matter.
And yeah. After coming from a bunch of Logitech mice, it would be a pain in the ass to "click twice".

Ugh, it's so hard to click twice.
I have no problem clicking twice. I've been using it for a couple days now and I haven't had once where I tried to double-click and it didn't do so.
The side buttons I do have occasional problems with, but no problems with left-clicking, right-clicking, or double-clicking.
I'm assuming you've installed the Mighty Mouse software and have tried adjusting double-click speed in System Preferences? I didn't need to adjust System Prefs personally, but that's a possiblity if you're having problems.
EDIT: or do you just mean that you have to click twice instead of programming one of the buttons as a double-click? If so maybe you can give Apple feedback to include that possiblity in the future. I didn't even know that was possible (but then again, I was using Apple's one-button mouse up until this week :) )

I finally got to an Apple Store to test one out and I love it. I would have bought two if they were wireless, sadly the wired-ness of it all kind of ruins it for me, PowerBook and all.
My notes on it:
The tracking is quite good, as was expected. The toggle-ball is awesome IMO, I love both the vertical and horizontal scrolling and find both of them to be quite easy to use. Diagonal scrolling was a bit tricky but doable, although the whole idea itself seems pretty useless save for a few specific applications or large image files.
The two side-click buttons seem a little difficult at first to use, however after playing around with it for a couple of seconds the pressure seems pretty good to avoid accidental pressing. I really like it, can't wait for a BT version :D

I played with one after they just pulled the first one out of the box on Friday. I really like the feel of it. It feels just like a Pro Mouse. I love the scroll ball, because it is the perfect size and has the perfect resistance. The side buttons work with little effort, and I found them to be useful with Exposè or Dashboard. The right click was a little trickier that I thought it would be, but it works great after you get used to it. If the thing wasn't so darn expensive, I could have justified buying one then. I'll probably buy one when the next revision is rolllled out. I'm perfectly happy with my Pro Mouse for now.

The thing that really amazed me was the fact that when they finally got one out, it took one of the guys about 45 minutes to get it working. After that, it still wasn't quite right, so I went to the other end of the store and watched a workshop on Mac OS X (he pronounced it Mac OS "EX")

No, definitely not.
After playing with one in the Apple store i found it to be awkward:
- sometimes the 'left' mouse button click didn't register
- the way the mouse sense a right click
- awkward to click both side buttons - why?? Can't see the reason why you can't just click on side of the mouse.
This mouse needs a serious revision.
Very disappointing.

I'd like a wireless version too... My problem is that BT mice are no good for me - if I'm to use a wireless mouse, I need a one with a USB dongle that registers as a standard USB HID device so I can use it with my KVM switch :( Another thing that I find offputting is that I do have a Bluetooth mouse (A Microsoft one, forgot the model) but the motion is really jerky, like some old, cheap, very low DPI optical mice - it might just be this specific one, but my experience so far isn't great. I think I'll stick to my trusty 5-year old wired Logitech USB optical mouse for some time to come yet.

should be nice for the Creative Suite. :p

Nice effort Apple, but you've been bested.Don't think you want to buy a DV Forge/MacMice product now.
Seems they may have filed for bankruptcy.

Don't know what Jack has planned, seemed nobody but Jack knows -- plus if some of the crap he planned to do to his employees may make you think twice.
Edit: Jack denies bankruptcy plans .... no telling what is happening, and a lot more fun in the Jack vs. Phil saga -- but it does seem these companies may be going out of business.

I wonder wether there are Mighy Mouse clones out there now? Surely other companies would not copy the idea and maybe slap in BT before Apple do themselves?? Anyone come across anything?

Vote: Poll: Are you going to buy Apple's new Mighty Mouse? (http://www.macpolls.com/?poll_id=479)
No, maybe, ...need to try it out first :)
My left hand is always free...
BUT, what I am really waiting for, is the wireless "Batmouse"!
The Batmouse is a superthin mouse that hides in the "Batcave" to the side of the ibook! Simply push a button and the Batmouse slides out ready to use.
Or the Hovering Emergency BatLight, just push a button and a red optical light is directed towards your ceiling. Simply place your hand intercepting the light.
[I find it very nice on airplanes, although some get spooked out.]

I got to try the Mighty Mouse at the Apple Store yesterday.
Pros: The mouse is the right size for my hand
The side buttons are in the right spot for the way I use a mouse
Cons:
You have to lift your left finger for the right click to register
The mouse is not ergonomic due to the right click issue
If Apple can fix the right click issue then I would seriously consider getting a Mighty Mouse. Until that time, I'll stick with the Logitech MX-300 for wired use and TheMouse BT for bluetooth use.

I bought one today and think it's absolutely fantastic. The one thing that worried me was the right mouse button clicking - but I've discovered that I automatically take my left mouse button finger off the thing when I press down anyway, so it's all good.
And the trackball is superb - just in the right place.
Really happy with the purchase. £35 was a great price for me.

You must be new here - this has been happening off and on for years. ;) Sometimes you just have to be patient until a new one comes along...

I won a Mighty Mouse the other day. It's a POS:-) Sorry, but I really don't like the feel of it and I usually like things that come with nipples.

Multiple buttons would be nice to have in Powerbooks. I just bought two iBooks the other day (one as a gift and one for me) but I would replace one with a new Powerbook in a heartbeat if it had some new features such as this.
On trackballs - I like them too. My first Powerbook had a trackball.

I went to the Apple Store in London a couple of weeks ago with the aim of buying one if I liked it after trying it. Unfortunately, after a play with both the mouse itself and associated software settings I decided against it for 2 primary reasons:
1. The positioning and feel of the side buttons is terrible. I had to change the position on my hand on the mouse (long fingers but otherwise not a big hand) in order to grip the buttons and cause them to activate. The overall feeling was one that was far too strange and I couldn't see the point relative to "normal" buttons.
2. The scroll ball does not scroll the screen far enough vertically per movement of the ball even with the software settings in the System Preferences setting this movement to the maximum. Horizontal scrolling was fine but the vertical scrolling problems were enough to convince me that it would take ages to scroll through a document.
Aside from these gripes there were aspects of the mouse that I liked. The left and right "buttons" felt fine and I had no problems using them. Equally the scroll ball itself felt fine although clicking it required more of a push than I really would have liked.
Overall, I think the mouse has promise but that it needs to have some of the functional aspects addressed instead of the design. Perhaps a revision will cure some of my gripes and, at which point, I will have no problems putting down the cash.

Yeah, if I hadn't already bought my BT mouse. Anyone want to trade?
I'm a little weary of the Mighty Mouse because of all the bad things I've heard, but when it comes down to it, I really don't mind wired mice and as long as everything works, I'm happy. Maybe I'll head to the nearest Apple retailer and test it out. :)

My wife likes it, and I said we will get one when it gets wireless. The wireless on the iMac is just too seamless.
I also found that I naturally pick up my right finger to right click.

I like using my one button black Apple Pro Mouse. So I don't see me upgrading any time soon.

I agree, it makes it easier to sit at the computer all day long without my hand hurting.

Initially, I thought no.
But I just used a friend's, and was really impressed. The right click functionality (finally) was nice. The scroll wheel was really neat, though the horizontal scroll could be faster. I think there is a little app out there somewhere that lets you crank it up, so that's not much of a problem.
My friend had his set to the side buttons activated Expose, which was quite handy and cool. But unfortunately the side buttons are too difficult to push in.
I think I'll pick one up when I order my Nano dock.
