Loss of resolution choices in ML

I have a rMBP connected to a TB display and I could swear in Lion I had the option to use 720p and 1080p. This option also disappeared in games so for 16:9 I am limited to:

1440p, 1152p and 900p.

Use the laptop's screen I get my choices back of course, but I just want to confirm this is normal.

I'm upping this thread as I have searched a bit and found nothing on this. I am using a Mac Pro and would like to drop the resolution of my second screen from 1920x1080 to 1280x720, but that option isn't there anymore and instead it proposes almost only 4:3 screen sizes... Does anyone know how to get OS X to properly detect the external screen aspect ratio?
