Hi I am creating a Application and was wondering how to obtain a look and feel of this kind of texture

http://dribbble.com/shots/632522-Activity-Message-Alert

Its the grey drop down alert in the upper right corner. If you look closely you can see that it has a pixelated texture that gives it just a little more depth in the alert.

I would really like to figure out how to do this the right way rather than just copying the texture and then duplicating it to make it bigger.

It looks like a 2x2 or 4x4 pixel squared pattern with white outline and black center. You can easily make that in photoshop and save it as a texture. If you want to know how to do that then I can tell you as well.

Thank you very much for that. As I am somewhat familiar with Photoshop I am not an experienced user. If you wouldn't mind could you go into detail with that? I know how to make a texture for a fill pattern but what would be the best way to make the 4x4 texture? would I have to make it so when they connect to each other it forms a pattern?

There's too much variation in the noise for it to be a 2x2 or 4x4 texture. I'm thinking the base element is more around 128x128 or 256x256 px in size.

It's easy as hell to make. Just start a new canvas around the same size as the resolutions mentioned above, fill it with a dark greyish color, use the Add Noise filter, and play with the settings til you're happy. Getting it to tile so the pattern repeats without any seams when placed side by side is even simpler. As long as your canvas is sized to a power of 2 resolution (4x4, 8x8, 16x16, 32x32, etc.), Photoshop will set the filter to tile automatically.
