View Full Version : Broken 14" iBook Screen. My Options?

My daughter has a 14" iBook. She inadvertently hit the screen with a small but fast moving object and the screen is no longer working. The screen (at first) looked almost like a broken window with black lines emenating from the point of contact. It worked for a while. But, over the past few days, the damage has spread and the screen is now non-functional.

I am wondering what my options are. Apple says it charges about $1000 to fix a screen. When weighed against the price of a new (or used) iBook, that seems relatively high. Can I buy a screen cheaper somewhere else? Can I buy a used one? Is it possible to install it myself? Are there any other options I am not considering.

Thank you in advance for taking time to read my post and to consider helping me. I appreciate it.

Well, that's a much better price than $1000. Thank you. For the record, the iBook is a G4, 14".

It is possible to do it yourself, but the cost of the screen is quite close to the total price of having someone else to it.

The iBooks and the PB12 have the LCD panel screwed together, which makes them much easier to repair that the rest of the PBs.

I would either sell the parts on eBay and net a new machine or get a broken machine on eBay and replace the screen. Probably the first.
