i downloaded a couple photoshop brushes. specifically realistic looking things like scotch tape etc.

when i paint the scotch tape brush on a white background it looks perfect, however the actual brush itself is opaque and a bit transparent. if i were to try and paint this brush on a colored background the effect would not be as good as it looks on a white background.

how do i merge the brush and the white background so that i can move the scotch tape onto another image?

i dont want to move the entire white background, doing so would just look like a huge white square, i only want to move the part of the white background that is giving the transparent scotch tape some color.

using the magnetic lasso tool is not an option because doing so removes some of the shadows and details of the brush.

ccan anyone help?

Is there any reason you can't use the tape brush on a transparent layer? If it isn't dark enough just duplicate the layer a couple of times (in the layers panel click it and drag up while holding option to copy it) and then merge the duped layers. some of the effects brushes I've used aren't strong enough on their own and you need to hit them more than once.

You could also use the white layer with the tape on it and set the blending mode (dropdown next to the opacity slider at the top of the layers panel) to Multiply and seeing if that has the desired result. I think it will do basically the same thing as using it on a transparent layer though.
