I have a 2.2 Ghz BlackBook late 2007 with 4Gb RAM.

It is not Mountain Lion compatible but serves as a useful knock about for the family members. I put a Seagate Momentus XT 320GB drive into it a couple of years ago, which although increasing capacity also reduces the battery time.

I note that in the UK Crucial have their previous generation SSDs at fairly moderate prices [like this http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CT128V4SSD2]

Will popping in a SSD like the one quoted above improve both the battery duration and zippiness of the BlackBook, or should I conserve my funds for a replacement machine of a more recent generation?

A real SSD will certainly make your blackbook faster but it's not going extend the battery life - at least not noticeably.

Buy a big, fast SSD and then you can install it in your new Macbook Pro
