View Full Version : How to enable iTunes and Spotify notifications in Notification Center! - NowPlaying

New version "Listening To" is now available ON THE APPSTORE!!
https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/listening-to/id553010133?mt=12

Or if you'd prefer, here's the old version:

Hi everyone! I've developed an app which I'd like to share with everyone. :)

It's called "NowPlaying". NowPlaying is an app which enables iTunes and Spotify track change notifications in Mountain Lion's notification center. What's even better is that it is tiny (it uses hardly any CPU and less than 8MB ram!).

In this most recent update I have also added 8 new languages (Spanish, Dutch, Turkish, Hungarian, Czech, French. Russian and Polish) these translations were done using google translate (lol!!) so if anyone sees any errors let me know on this thread and I'll correct them with the next update :)

AppStore Version
Renamed to "Listening To" for copyright reasons...

I released the first 3 versions of NowPlaying in this thread: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1417924
Thanks to everyone there for their contributions and bug finding skills :)

Not very open minded.

I listen to Radio Streams a lot. So I love this little App. It shows the Artist and Titel of a Track I didn't know.

So thanks again heghead for your passionate work, every update and sharing it with us. ;)

Don't know why, but it seems like there is an angry little man inside you. If you don't like the app, then don't comment on the thread. Do you do this on every single thread on this forum? Just barge in and post whatever you feel like? Stay away from things that don't interest you.

I love this app and thank you so much for your hard work. I would love to donate if possible, I think most of us would for sure. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple introduces more branches for the notification center. It should have already been able to use iTunes and maybe even 3rd party apps that use Growl. I think there should be something released in 10.8.1 that picks up Growl notification signals and makes them notifications through notification center. It isn't much to ask and was the minimum I was already expecting from Mountain Lion.

Thanks again!

It's easier to swipe to open NC to check the name of the song than to switch to iTunes.

Perfect, been looking for something like this ever since the iTunes dock notifications popup stopped working in ML.

Would be nice if it had a custom icon... something other than the iTunes logo.
EDIT: Would also be cool if the notification didn't pop up when iTunes is the topmost app (i.e. when you're using iTunes)

Downloaded this yesterday from the other thread and it's fantastic!!!

Perfect for listening to iTunes and not having the window up while doing other things. The notification pops up and flys out just long enough to see what is playing.

Love this app!

Just installed the latest version. Fantastic.

One minor suggestion. When I tried to copy the new version into my Applications folder and told it to replace the old version, it wouldn't let me because the old one was still running. I just opened the Activity Monitor and killed the process before replacing it, but it would be nice if you could prompt the user to ask them if they want to quit the old version when trying to replace it. An alternative would be to have a small menubar icon that would allow you to access preferences, quit, etc.

Keep up the good work.

This is one of the last reasons I am keeping the app Bowtie/Growl.

Does this allow for a hotkey to change to the next or previous songs and pause music? Lastfm support? I need before!

Yesterday I installed the current version, and I just installed the new version with Spotify Notifications. It works great!

And "charlieegan3", please go away here. Make something better... Oh wait... You can't. :/

I really appreciate his work, and you could never do better, charlie!

----------

@Xavier Of course it accepts hotkeys to change the song etc. The App iTunes/Spotify isn't changed, and the keys will still work. This App just shows what song it is playing, it doesn't change any keys!

I have Hiss which sends Growl notifications to the NC. Spotify has Growl support, and now that I have this app I would like to turn it off so that I don't get two notifications every time a song plays. Does anyone know how to turn off Growl on Spotify? I looked through settings and preferences and can't find anything.

Great app, but I don't really see the point for me. If you want to check your song, you can just right click on your iTunes/Spotify dock icon, and you'll get the track title along with the artist (Spotify) or the artist and album (iTunes). Plus, you also have controls present as well.

Just my $0.02.

I think the point is that it notifies you when the track changes, saving you from having to do any work to find out what track has just come on. No?

And if you want to check what song is playing it's less work as well. Just swipe with two fingers on the trackpad, rather than move pointer to dock icon, right click, then click off.

Does this thing pull in Album Art from iTunes for the alerts that fade out? If you could make that happen that would be awesome! Wouldn't want anything else showing on that though to keep it minimal.

Then in notification center I would like to be able to change the rating of the song. That would just make this perfect.

I love this app. It's really useful if you have a lot of songs when you're listening to iTunes on shuffle.

I PMed with heghead about this and unfortunately it's not possible with notification center's limitations.

The Notification Center always uses the application’s own icon, there’s currently no way to specify a custom icon for a notification.

I thought it was just pulling in data from iTunes? So instead of trying to change the icon would it be possible to do the Album Art like the other metadata is currently done and have it displayed in addition to the current icon?

I'm not exactly sure about doing it this way. I don't think it would work because I'm pretty sure it has to be text but I could very well be wrong.

However, I know when you receive a message of an image in the Messages app, the notification says "Attachment: 1 Image" instead of actually displaying the image.

Whenever playing a song whose title begins with a ( the app doesn't display the song title at all. It removes the entire title and just puts "Terminal" in its place. Does anyone else have this problem?

Heghead, I'm seeing the parentheses problem as well. Tracks that have parenthesised text at the beginning of the trach name come up as "Terminal". Is the problem that you're replacing [] but not () in your NameFixed lines? I tried to fix it in AppleScript but it wouldn't let me run it after I re-compiled the main.scpt.

You're right!! I remember noticing this problem and I swear I had fixed this in one edition, however I must not have saved the changes because I can't see it at all!! :(

Please make this into an App Store app. Seriously.

I would LOVE to, however there are a few things getting in the way:

The iTunes and Spotify logos are copyrighted, and I really like the look of using the actual app icons. I guess I could part with them if I had to though... lol :)
The Mac Developer membership is too expensive
I don't have the knowledge required to upload an app onto the AppStore and keep it maintained (with updates etc..). I've never done anything like that before...

If there is anyone out there who has a developer account and thinks they can help solve some of these problems, please PM me :)

Found this gem in your old thread. Loving the Spotify notifications now! Many thanks!

I see that the notification shows again when you pause and immediately play again or rewind the song, is that the intended behaviour? Or is there a way to make the notification only show for new songs? Or when you resume play from a long pause or something. I'm probably nit-picking haha and this might not be possible with Applescript.

Sorry, I should have clarified. I have an older Macbook Pro which does not have those keys. I have to use an app, in this case Bowtie, to achieve this.

This is just an Applescript container that feeds playing track info into Notification Center. For there to be new keyboard shortcuts, Last.fm integration etc. you would need a full blown coded application, like Coversutra or Bowtie like you use.

I have created a similar app. It uses less CPU since it is not a loop checking for current song. Normally between 0.0% and 0.2% of the CPU.

Hey everyone,

Now Playing is a great app i like it and use it very often. Because of that i wanted to change the Icons of the Notifications for iTunes & Spotify. Because the files are not easy to find I wrote a little Automator Program which can change the icon easily. You'll be prompt choose the Icons first for iTunes and then for Spotify. I liked nyolc8's Icon so i created booth a iTunes and a Spotify Icon. In the attachment are the app and the two icon files. But leave the icon name the same because if you change them it won't work. Have fun! :)

Edit: I localized the program in english. Hope it works with the paths now on an other system with different language settings too.

I have looked it and without editing Mountain Lion's core files, it is impossible to customize the icon which is shown. It must be the app's icon.

Anyway, I've found an app called DockArt that automatically changes the iTunes icon to the current songs album art. Is there some way that this would enable you to implement the requested feature. Just a thought. Thanks.

Hi All!

I've teamed up with an extremely experienced developer, and created a new version of NowPlaying which... wait for it...

IS NOW ON THE APP STORE!!!

Pretty good news, I know. It's now available for download. Due to copyright issues, we've had to rename it to "Listening To" and give it a new logo.

We've worked hard to make it as stable and efficient as possible. Consider this an ultra refined/premium version of NowPlaying which is easier to update, uses less system resources, is more responsive and will be heavily supported.

Currently v1.0 only supports iTunes, however version 1.1 will be released very soon and will add Spotify support and a few other little features.

For anyone who would rather continue using NowPlaying, I will leave the MediaFire link online.

For everyone else, here's the link to the AppStore version!

Thanks to everyone for your interest in this project.

Cheers!!!

I'm sorry to hear that - I'm the developer of Listening To. how would you suggest we allow access to preferences like start at login and toggling spotify support (which is a part of the coming 1.1 update) without a menubar icon? Do it like Growl does: once you choose the option to run with no menubar icon, you relaunch the application in order to access preferences. It's still running in the background, so "relaunching" just opens the currently running instance.

Yeah or that. Some people actually like to load up their menubars and Docks. But if it's your style to keep that to a minimum, it's awesome when applications allow no menubar icons.

Awesome! Are you guys going to keep the new logo or?

Yeah. We like the logo. Unless there's a good reason to change it, we'll keep it.

I wasn't knocking it or anything, just curious if it was ever possible to go back to the Now Playing logo? Or is that a copyright issue with Apple?

We can't hijack the iTunes icon, also we're going for a unified icon for Spotify and iTunes notifications, and the current icon says "Music" regardless of source quite nicely.

I understand.

With that in mind, are you guys planning on continuing to develop Now Playing? With the latest second build of 10.8.2, Spotify is broken with 1.4 of Now Playing, other than that, it works pretty well too.

NowPlaying is dead - no further development and no current or future support. Sorry.

Do you think that Apple will eventually add iTunes song changes to Notification Center natively? They used to have a special option like that in Lion, accessible with a Terminal command or if GUI is more your thing, via Onyx. It was kind of pre-NC in that it happened above the Dock. Not sure why nothing came of it with ML. Seems like something they should implement, huh? I guess I'll just roll with Now Playing or maybe Listening To PRN until Apple does it themselves!
