I want to play x264 1080p mkv or avi files with h264 hardware acceleration on so I need perian to run it through quicktime but the version we have now is buggy, any alternative for that ?

You can convert the files. Mkv is just a container so with the right software, like Quick Time 7 Pro for example, you can fix mkv files in seconds. For avi you might need to re-encode them. I know MplayerX will play just about everything but I don't know if it has hardware acceleration built in.
