sharing across network mac-win question

ok here's the deal...i'm running my powermac on my school's network...and i just bought another hard drive that i put in to keep all of my music and movies on. i'm usually not in my room in the dorms, but in someone else's and we like to stream movies and music all of the time between computers...well i don't have os x server, so what i was doing was i had a guest account set up which i stored all of my music in and i allowed sharing on mac and windows...so it was no problem at that point. but recently, i moved all of my music and movies on to the new hard drive and i haven't been able to find a way to allow windows to recognize and read off of the second hard drive. i tried putting an alias into the guest folder, but windows won't recognize it...on macs it's simple and after you type in the user name and password it allows you to choose what directory you want to get into...any help is appreciated!! thanks

If you cant get it to work, i would help but im dead tired right now and cant think straight. make a simple ftp server. I have found that to be one of the easiest ways to share stuff in my house. but im sure youll get it working the way you had it before.

why not drag it into the /Users/Shared directory??

1. i've never done ftp before...explain how please

2. windows only recognizes what is in the "guest" folder which is an actual user that i set up on my computer

3. the "users/shared" directory is on my primary hard drive which i do not want to share out...i only want the second hard drive to be doing anything on the network

well...the shared directory is 'kinda' on that hard drive. what you will be essentially doing is using the directory as a mountpoint for access to the second hard drive. it will not really be accessing the first hard drive. the beauty of *nix at work.

i can't just drag a the hard drive into a folder on the other hard drive...it just won't do such a thing...it's not feasible

k this works...unless windows is being gay...but the OS X side does work...


run terminal
type ' sudo ln -s /Volumes/*hd-name* ~Guest/*whatevername* '
press enter, put in pass, press enter

now enable windows sharing and connect to it from the windows box.

it should be able to browse through the link you created.

you have to make sure that the guest has permission to peruse the files in question. also make sure if you guest is capitalized, do so, if not dont.

Wow, you sure do know a lot for never formally
learning anything. About unix that is :D. All that
code stuff that only 4 people on macrumors
understand. I just know a miniscule Amount of
c++. But I take a computer science class. I
could only imagine trying to teach myself c++...

I have a mac and a PC, and they are networked
via ethernet. I have it to where I can send files to
the PC (I selected my PC's shared drive from the
connect to server option in the 'go' menu. Well,
sending files to the PC works just fine, but how do
I send files from the PC to the mac. I haven't
exactly spent much time figuring this out, but I
still don't know how to do it, and this looked like
a good place to ask.

you need to make sure your windows file sharing is turned on in the sharing pane of your preferences...then when you type \\<themac'sipaddress> don't include <> in that though...and then interenet explorer will ask for your username and password...drag and drop!
