View Full Version : Networking an eMac...help?

I'm hoping to network my eMac with the other PCs in the house, using a Linksys router.
This model is several years old, the G4, 700MHZ, with no Airport card.
Can I simply buy a USB adapter available at Circuit City?
And if so, how do I config it?

You mean you want to do this all wirelessly, right?
A USB adaptor should work, but you've got to make sure it's Mac compatible. It'll probably say so on the box. I'm not sure how many there are out there so best of luck finding one because the other option is to get a second hand AirPort card from eBay and they can be expensive.
As for configuring them, well, I suppose it depends on each individual adaptor. I'm guessing a Mac compatible one will come with instructions and maybe software. :)

I found an Airport card on Ebay just now for about $70 US.
This may seem quite newbie, but am I correct to assume that the Airport card will pick up the signal from the Linksys?

AirPort cards (not AirPort Extreme cards, they are 802.11g too) comply with the 802.11b wireless networking standard. I haven't seen a wireless router that doesn't accommodate for 802.11b yet. Having said that, they can be manipulated to only let the newer 802.11g cards connect but this is both unlikely and ultimately very easily fixed. :)
So yes, it will work.
