Can I do it on my own or do I have to bring it in to Apple store?

Can they do it in store? Mine is pretty floppy, and it's only a month or two old.

It's normal, don't worry about it. There is only a problem if it closes or slides in a 90 degree position with the palm rest facing the ground. Otherwise, the only way to tighten the hinge is to replace it with another.

Mine's looser than I've noticed on other laptops but I assumed it to be an intentional thing. If is was tighter you wouldn't be able to adjust the screen without holding the base in place due to its weight (or lack of).

I had the original Air, and after 1 year it was very loose in the hinges, and I took it to a premium dealer. They promptly replacde the screen, as that supposedly was the only way to fix it.

Yes, I was also thinking it was designed like that, having kept in mind that they would like for the user to be able to open the lid from closed position with just one hand with little resistance, without the base leaving the surface area at all. But at the same time I much prefer the resistance my Thinkpad T41/61 X40/60 offered in comparison, as when it's on my lap any slight movement would not cause the lid to move out of position. Minor annoyance I guess.

I would love to hear more MacBook Air users' thoughts on this too.

My wife has a current (2012) 13" Air and the screen hinges have definitely become looser over time, to the point where if you adjust the position of the Air on your lap, the screen moves downwards a little.

By contrast, my 13" MacBook Pro has a much firmer screen hinge action that has not loosened up over time.

I'm looking at replacing mine with an Air next time around, bit this bother me a bit. Have most other users of the 13" Air had the same experience?

Cheers,
Mike
