The Telegraph reports that Apple is likely to drop the iPhone 3GS from its lineup once the company introduces the iPhone 5 next week, leaving room for the iPhone 4 to slide down to the free-on-contract price point currently occupied by the iPhone 3GS. The report also indicates that Apple may introduce an 8 GB version of the iPhone 4S to occupy a middle price point as the company did last year with the iPhone 4.
The new update will mean that the 8GB version of the iPhone 4 will be the entry-level iPhone, probably given away free on £20 per month contracts, as the 3GS is currently. Sources close to retailers also suggested that an 8GB version of the 4S could be introduced.
According to the report, Apple will be releasing the iPhone 5 with three different capacities, presumably the same 16 GB/32 GB/64 GB lineup seen with the current iPhone 4S.

It would certainly not be a surprise for Apple to discontinue the iPhone 3GS in order to keep its iPhone family at three separate devices with the cheapest being offered for free on contract. Shifting the iPhone 4 into the position currently held by the iPhone 3GS would also give more carriers the ability to offer a free iPhone, as the iPhone 4 is available in both GSM and CDMA versions while the iPhone 3GS is only available as a GSM device.

The iPhone 3GS would likely be most missed by contract-free customers, prevalent in high numbers in many emerging markets. Apple currently sells the unlocked, contract-free iPhone 3GS for $375 in the United States and at somewhat higher prices elsewhere such as 2888 yuan ($455) in China, and it could presumably drop that price even further if it elected to continue offering the device alongside the three other iPhone models.

They've done this for the past years.

$0 4 8Gb
$99 4S 8Gb
$199 5 16Gb/32Gb
$299 5 32Gb/64Gb
$399 5 64Gb/128Gb

Doubt the storage options the right of the "/" but Apple may surprise us.

Makes sense. I fully expected this would happen the second they announced the 4S, especially with iOS 6 being very limited on the 3GS :)

Sounds like the established pattern. Good news for people who want an iPhone but not the latest edition.

I think the $99 option will be the 4S 16 GB. I'd love to see the 5 start at 32 GB for $199 but I doubt it will happen.

it was only a matter of time and the 3GS had a good run.

Good news for anyone that wants a new free iPhone since the iPhone 4 works well with IOS 6.

Exactly. Plus if you basically want all the features of the iPhone 5, 99 bucks gets you the 4S. Thats a pretty good deal I think.

I would be pretty surprised if the storage options weren't increased.

iPhone 4-8GB-$0
iPhone 4S-16GB-$100
iPhone 5-32GB-$200
iPhone 5-64GB-$300

Or at least

iPhone 4-8GB-$0
iPhone 4S-8GB-$100
iPhone 5-16GB-$200
iPhone 5-32GB-$300
iPhone 5-64GB-$400

I agree with you.

If we see the $99 4S get 16Gb treatment, it should guarantee that the $199 5 will get 32Gb treatment - and increase upwards.

But I don't think it'll happen this year. Other phone manufacturers are still hovering around 16-32Gb at the $199-299 price point, so Apple shouldn't feel pressured. Please, the chips are still fairly expensive and a large price of the component costs.

I'm not thrilled given the cost of Flash. Why on earth can't they do a 8GB iPhone 4, 16GB iPhone 4S, and then put out a 128GB iPhone 5 at the top slot, or at least, lower the price of the 64gig? I mean, at $829, it wouldn't affect their profit margins given the massive declines in price since the release of the iPhone 4S...

Apple: We might sell our devices competitively, but we get you if you dare want to store anything on the device.

iPhone 4 8gig? Anything less than 16gig with the size of retina display apps seems just silly.

8GB 4S is absurd, considering that it records 1080p video.
I'd say it's about time to see a 8GB 4 - 16GB 4S - 32/64/128GB 5.
