Elsewhere, more than 30 media and technology companies - including all four major labels - have formed a consortium called Coral that aims to create standards for DRM interoperability.
Coral, which does not count Microsoft or Apple among its members, intends to unveil a framework for interoperability within the next few months.

This needs to happen. Technology is soooooooo wonderful, but with technology comes 50 billion variations of the same thing and thatcauses compatability issues. not just music, ANYTHING digital! I believe that competition makes for a good business enviornment, but incompatability is a whole other issue. This needs to get fixed and both Apple and MS need to get onboard NOW!

This is identical to the article Macbytes linked to 2 days ago. The only difference is that the other one is from Rueters.

Let me just add something to my last comment to clearify. i am not saying that Apple should bend and get rid of its DRM. I almost think they should allow it to be used by other or if other companies dont want to do that, do what Microsoft does.... force it down your throat so you have no ther option BUT to use it. Ist that waht MS did with WMA? They are the monster company and said "this is what you will us". Apple may need to do the same thing. Make THEM come to you.

It is, I think the Herald must have picked it up over the weekend. They run their Tech news sections on a Tuesday and a Friday each week.

Yeah, this is just a repost of the same Reuters article by the NZHerald. Who manages MacBytes? They should be a teeny bit more careful... not that I've never double posted...!!

I don't think Apple wants MS to share the same DRM. Why would they do something that would immediately lower profits?

Like it or not, Apple has pulled a microsoft on the music industry; creating and locking everyone into 1 DRM format. "Oh, you want that to play on your iPod? Well you can't buy songs from other companies." For those few businesses that can pull it off, this is a very good move profitwise.

Good job Apple, in 2 years Real and Napster will be dead. :D
