i'm thinking about picking up an 800 MHz ibook, but would really love it if someone who has one can run the XBench benchmarking app and post the results.
get the free app here (http://www.xbench.com)
anyone? thanks!

Can't wait for the results, I too am interested in the iBook 800.
noht*, how much memory will you have in it when you run the tests?

if i get my lazy ass up and buy an additional DIMM, then it's probably going to be 384 MB, maybe 640. in any case, i will post results as soon as i get my 800/12.1/AP/Combo :D

it trounces my pbook g3/400 in every category. its overall score was 30.66.
i think the ibook is finally fast enough for me to justify the purchase.

One thing...does XBench take advantage of dual CPU's?

Nov 16, 2002, 02:28 PM
so the 800 g3 ibook is only slightly faster in overall score than a 400 g4 tibook?
that doesn't sound right, but the 800 ibook at $1300 is certainly cheaper than a refurbished tibook 400 g4 would be now, so i guess one could look at it that way
i wonder how the 800 g3 ibook would bench if it had the 640 MBs of RAM?

I think it does because on the dualies it mentions two CPUs (6th & 7th line)

Yeah, though I don't know much about macs yet, it maybe my memory holding it back. I plan to upgrade but not for a few week so hopefully someone else with one and more ram will let us know:)

over all score for the imac was 75.33
I have a new ibook 800 14" w/640mb that i just got and will post the results later. I was unable to copy the text from the results page...is there a trick? If I can't copy/paste when I do the ibook i'm assuming the first item that says results is the important figure here.

Overall score was 62.07 with the unit plugged in. Looks to be just shy of a Ti 667 w/512! Not bad for $1600.

One thing...does XBench take advantage of dual CPU's?
You guys want edit and use the {code} text {/code} for this stuff to make it easier to read - except replace the { with the square brackets [
Makes it much easier to read.
Of course a mod stopping by and doing it won't hurt either (hint).

iBook benchmarking speed,
do you think there are a signficant improvements of speed in the different types of RAM such as PC100 or PC133 and if its CL2 or CL3? (especially for the 800 MHz iBook)
"Overall score was 62.07 with the unit plugged in. Looks to be just shy of a Ti 667 w/512! Not bad for $1600."
steveng56, what kind of RAM did you put on your 800 iBook?

I know it detects them, but I'm still not so sure that it actually uses them.
If you look at the results from the 933Mhz QuickSilver (by DHagan4755) and my DP1Ghz QuickSilver the speed difference is not great, it looks like just the difference between a 933Mhz & a single 1Ghz.
DHagan4755 (933Mhz): CPU Test 113.42
edesignuk (DP1Ghz): CPU Test 129.49
I would certainly expect far better results from the DP1Ghz if XBench was optimized for dual CPU's.

maybe there's still life after all in the g3!
price > performance...not bad:)

The memory I used was made by PNY and is pc133/CL3. I don't know if I should do the test agian in week or so because my Ibook seems to be getting noticably faster each day.

Hey, keep posting those XBench results! I'll run it when I get my GHz Superdrive Powerbook. Anyway, I made an updated chart with the XBench results--I included the overall score, cpu test, memory test, and quartz graphics test. I did not include the drive test...i'm not sure how full/fragmented your disks are. Anyway, I'll post a new chart every other day or so to summarize the benchmarks :)

Thanks Over Achiever, this is getting to be quite interesting.
I now deffinatly don't think that it is dual CPU aware when carrying out the tests, there is no way a single 933 would beat a dual 867 if it was.

If you look at the "CPU Tests" that is not dual CPU aware... but if you look at the "thread tests" that is.

Thanks for doing that. I'm the one with the 400mhz/PBG4. I guess I should get a PowerBook soon.

I ran this test while browsing a few apps open, it probably made a difference, but who cares? Not me - I am still happy with it.

Alright, I updated my graphs with the new info and I added the threaded test since it might take advantage of dual processors.
My post was here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?postid=188636#post188636)
This is really cool...I'm thinking of starting another thread that displays graphs for each test separately as well as together...if a mod would like to make it a sticky, that'd be great! What do ya'll think?
Should I make separate plots for each type of computer?
I just realized that we haven't yet answered the point of this thread. We've only had one new iBook...any others out there?

If you look at the CPU score for my above post, it was 92.47 which is certainly within striking distance of the G4 benchmarks posted in this thread. I have a feeling the 100MHz bus is the major bottleneck. I mean, take a look at the Memory scores on the iBooks...
If Apple could just bump up the bus speed to 133MHz, the G3 is going to be just fine as the iBook CPU probably into 2004 (probably around the time the TiBooks get a 970 and the iBooks go to G4).
My user experience with Jaguar on my iBook is already pretty snappy (granted I'm not a gamer or a pro graphics user), but imagine it with a 1GHz+ G3, a 133MHz bus, a Radeon 9000 64MB, and 768MB RAM (they have to go to 256MB built-in eventually...).

Possible processor throughput is higher getting data to the RAM more efficiently? *shrugs*

One thing...does XBench take advantage of dual CPU's?
It does...in the thread tests.
Did you notice the Memory Contention against AssassinOfGates dual 867?
383.91 MB/sec for dual 867 MHz
280.19 MB/sec for dual 1 GHz
234.52 MB/sec for dual 800 MHz (mine)
Notice how the memory controllers have improved?

if you look at your results, you'll see that the only scores above 60 (your average) were the disk tests, and those are out of line.

could you post your entire XBench results so we can compare just the memory test to others (i.e. demonx, lmalave)?
the whole result, please, for those of us keeping score at home :-)
thanks

maybe we should do this with the Disk
test deselected.

Just thought I'd submit this for fun:
This is my PowerComputing PowerWave running a Powerlogix G3/400/1MB upgrade. (more info at http://jonsharp.net/mac.html) I am planning on getting a new iBook 800 in a few weeks, so this thread has been helpful. Of course, I'd love a PowerBook, but I think the iBook suits me and my budget much better. Have fun looking at this benchmark. I'll have something better soon!

There from a program called XBench. You can get it here. (http://xbench.com/)

These results, as you will find out at the Xbench home page, are standardized against a 800Mhz DP QS Mac. It has a ton of ram and disk space too.
This machine scores 100 in all tests. That is how you can determine how your machine compares to everyone elses.
A hint, i quit finder as well as every other app before i ran mine, i think it made my results worse, see for your self though
