View Full Version : Prove Student Status Online?

How do I prove that I'm a college student when I order online? There wasn't anything to confirm my student status... All i did was select the college. Will I be required to send in anything?

o i c..... so what's the point of having student discounts when anyone can become a 'student'?

You should follow the honors system. And not use it if you don't deserve it.

From memory they do random checks but I'm not exactly sure of how this happens. However, I'm 99% sure that they do check some purchases.
Either way, not directing this at anyone and it kind of goes without saying, but it's not cool to take advantage of this pretty generous offer by Apple.

Sometimes after you check out with your order, they will ask for a scan of your student id, class schedule, first born child, etc. to verify that you are a student.

Yes it is, I just used it and I'm happy it was there. I tried getting a student discount on Dreamweaver and it was a pain. I had to scan my student idea with a cover letter and a copy of all the order and everything, it was like 10 pages long. Then, they didn't get it so I had to call and do it all over again.
'Twas a pain. ;)
Apple always seems to make everything easier for the consumer. Kudos to you Apple.

I don't think they check. I've never heard of anyone getting verified before.

I just bought an iBook, no check.
I bet if you bought like a PowerMac G5 and some other stuff they might check because 9/10 students wouldn't buy that.

Then they wouldn't be a student. :p
I said 9/10 students ;)
Unless it was the 1/10 that would use it for serious video editing and graphics as their major.

I didn't doubt your legitimacy for a second Peter Griffin, I just thought I'd put that little disclaimer in. :)
I wouldn't worry too much about "getting prepared" for being checked because it's very rare and Apple won't mind if it takes a while to get your stuff together proving your eligibility status.

Whilst Apple may not check student status online, if you are a student and especially if you are a university student, I would recommend ordering over the phone from the Apple Education Store. This way they do ask for ID, but you get a better discount than you do online.
For example, I ordered my iBook a few weeks ago from the online education store. It was a stock 12" with an 80GB HD. Look at the prices quoted.
Online Apple Store: £768.99
Online Apple Education Store: £722.86
Apple Education Store: £676.47
Well worth ringing up and having to provide ID.

I ordered precisely the same configuration of iBook earlier this week, and managed to get the fully reduced price online, without having to prove any ID. You have to make sure to go to the Apple *Higher* Education store, though, (so it only applies to staff & students of higher education institutions) - but they still don't check ID.

They do random checks. They asked me to email my mum's ATL (teacher's union) card as a scanned image.
Now, after my results yesterday, that I'm into Bath university i'll have my own student's union card (NUS) but not until October. So I'll be using my mum's teacher one again soon to buy an iBook for uni.

Don't they accept an acceptance letter from a school as proof of status.

That would be kind of stupid. I could get accepted to a college but then decide to not even go to college at all. Then you shouldn't qualify.

Don't they accept an acceptance letter from a school as proof of status.
They take a student ID, schedule of classes, tuition bill, or an admissions letter. However, the acceptance letter must be recent (less than a few months old) as an indicator that you are buying in preparation for school but don't have any of the more preferred documents yet.
They most certainly do check, and many universities now require you to enter your student ID number into the Apple store before getting access. I'm not sure if this is decided on a per-university level or if Apple is gradually introducing that slightly stronger check.

Ah yes, but "Apple Store for Higher Education (Note that you can only access this Store from your Institution's network)". Being a) the holidays ATM and b) not starting my course until September, that option wasn't available to me.

Hi! ... I'm about to enter to college, i'm interested in architecture... and wanted to get one of the 15" powerbooks, but they are a bit expensive... the discount makes things so much easier... but the problem is, that i do not live in States... i live in Mexico, so I'm tempted to try anyway through the education store, and get it shipped somewhere in States, (a friend's house, or relative's) thinking i will not be checked, and if i had to prove me being a student, i would say that i'm a student, just not an american student and that i didn't know, but I don't know what kind of problems might this cause me. And I'm even more tempted because i found a link, through a university of design in Ohio, that offers a Mac bundle at a very low price, a Powerbook 15" SuperDrive 1.67GHz PowerPC G4 with 128MB Graphics Memory (instead of 64mb) with software (iWork, and Macromedia Studio MX) plus the AppleCare Protection Plan; all this for even less (-$20) than the regular price of a powerbook15" SuperDrive, nice, i know. This link doesn't have any conditions, but because it's special, and because it's saving you about $400, i'm thinking that the chances of getting checked will be much higher than if i just purchase the notebook, with 10% student discount. What do you think I should or could do?

Its stupid. The Apple store has the lod Elementary School I went to and my old JR High but NOT my High School. How do they expect me to get an iBook now????? I think a High School Student would have more of a use for an iBook than a Elementary or JR High Student..

I have no idea if there's a Mexican Apple Store online but either way, whether it is incorporated into the American one or not, all qualifying universities should be listed before entering the education section of the store. From there, you can find out if you are eligible.
I strongly recommend you don't try to get an EDU Mac if you are not eligible. :)
iZerok
Aug 22, 2005, 09:45 PM
No, there is not, unfairly. And, no, i'm not eligible, since it's only for american universities. This really sucks! I want it badly, and i know that an iBook won't do the work since it has the modest amount of 32mb of graphics memory, ... for a design notebook, that is unacceptable.

Apple Education called my college and asked for verification on my enrollment. I know because the Admissions Office called me and asked if they could tell Apple that I'm currently enrolled.
Nice privacy policy my university has. :)
You take a chance, Apple says if they ship the item and later find out that you weren't enrolled at that time, they will charge you for the difference between the education and retail stores.

Uh, that's for teachers and school staff. You have to be in college for the student discount. For those of you who don't qualify, try the Special Deals section for refurbs and previous generations. ;)

Where did you find out that they charge the difference between education and retail if they find out you aren't a student? I don't remember reading that in the contract but taht was probably because I skimmed it.
I thought all sales were final...especially if you pay cash in the store.

I bought my 14" ibook last month at an Apple retail store, and they just asked for an admissions letter. All I had was my campus housing letter, and that was good enough for them. They didn't even look at it, they just took my word for it (It was also kind of obvious since I was also wearing a t-shirt for that university).

Defrauding Apple is grounds for litigation. If they found that you used a discount improperly, you are liable for paying the difference in price. And that's being nice, because the extent of legal remedies go beyond that. If you buy in a store and pay cash and they don't check for ID, then that's just stupid. I've never heard of an Apple store that didn't check for verification of enrollment. If it's not an Apple store, that's their problem, not Apple's.
By purchasing using the student discount, you are legally affirming that you have a right to use that discount and any other use is misrepresentation, and in some cases, fraud, which is a felony offense.

Hi,
i was just wondering if the universities use NUS cards???
Abstract
Aug 23, 2005, 09:20 AM
So for all the people who said they were checked, I wonder how many of the people checked made a purchase online? Also, if they made an online purchase, I wonder if the checks are only done in America, or if they're done at all their worldwide online stores?
I have never been checked for online purchases, but have every time I made a purchase at the Apple Centre nearby.

Says who? I have received a discount in Canada, the UK, and Australia. It's not just American.

What are NUS cards?
In the UK, they're National Union of Students cards which prove you're a student to most organisations, get you access into the student union which generally has cheaper food/drink than anywhere else in town and a few other deals.

I know someone, as I think you all know him, ITASOR. He told me that he was using the edu discount for Tiger. Then 2 weeks later he recieved a letter in the mail saying he needed proof and other IDs. Luckily, his dad is a teacher. And his father bought it for him, so he was OK. But he did say that in the letter that if they don't get identification they are going to ban him from all edcucational purchases.
Sometimes they do check ;)

I know to get the discount for the University of Minnesota here we have to go through the techmart website and log in with our internet IDs ... that's how they check that we're students there, eligible to get the student discount. We can do the same things at the apple store ... go through the process with a sales rep watching, and get the discount in store as well.
