after I upgraded to iOS 6, free apps from the app store still require passwords to purchase. Strange...

See image. I was trying to download Open Tables.

happens both on my iPad and iPhone

This wasn't just for the 1st purchase of that session? or do you have any outstanding payments to make?

It seems free apps do still require a password, it's only updates that don't.

In the beta, for a brief time, it did not require passwords to install some free apps. Now it does.

Updates no longer require a password though.

sorry to hear that. it'd have been a nice addition. I know android currently does this and I like how it's implemented.

Purchase new apps, free or paid, requires password.

What's new:
Re-install previously purchased app which you had deleted, no password.
App updates, no password.

I hope this doesn't mean apps can be made to auto update. I know some developers would love to do so.

Even though you don't pay for those apps, you still need to authorise them to use with your iTunes account, hence why you still need to enter your password.

Updates don't require a password, I am unsure if free apps do (1st time download).
